"Girls 4x100 Relay Sets New State Record!!" Was this the headline we saw? We have a track team that goes to state and places in the top 7 in all their events. We have a girls relay team that takes first in two events and breaks the state record for cryin-out-loud. We take 3rd in boys 100m & 200m (photo finishes on both by the way). A girls 100m and 200m dash that places 3rd and 4th (photo finish here too, I think), 5th on boys triple jump, 7th in girls long jump, 4th in girls triple jump. Sounds impressive, doesn't it? What...

The Bohnet family of Wilson Creek had put on an old-fashioned plowing event for 27 years up until two years ago. At that time Pete Nelson of Odessa and Jon and Michelle Overmyer of Davenport did not want to see the event discontinued. So they asked the Schafers if there was a place on their land where plowing...

Veterans Day is Sunday, November 11, and on that day the members of Odessa VFW Post #7395, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the members of Odessa’s American Legion Post will serve up their annual turkey dinner/potluck. As usual, the groups will supply the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy and a hot vegetable, while salads and desserts are provided by the guests. The only thing different about this year’s event is that it will take place in the Old Town Hall rather than in what used to be called the VFW Building. The...

I don’t know how I managed to reach this advanced age believing I had to do it all. Or that I could do it all. I’ve never been able to decide if it’s an inherited trait or something I learned (or didn’t) along the way. What I do know, and have already announced to all and sundry, is that I must give up my beloved pumpkin patch. It’s so easy, in January when the world is dark and bleak, to allow myself to be seduced by seed catalog pictures of cheerful orange orbs. It’s easy...

Display booths representing the theme of this year’s fair were entered by Canniwai Grange of Odessa, which took first place and the Lincoln County Pomona Grange of Marlin which took second place. The Odessa/Harrington FFA chapters worked together on a display entitled “Is There Yellow in Your Green?”, which won Best of Show. In the FFA P...

The Odessa Chamber of Commerce heard updatess on several projects at its July 24 meeting, but at the top of the list was Deutschesfest, which is a mere 7 weeks away as The Record goes to press. It was reported that the FFA chapter has declined to be in charge of the Youth Garten, so options for other possible operators were discussed. Publicity chairwoman Korianne Scheller reported that she has still been unable to contact anyone from the carnival that set up in the Odessa Foo...
At the April 25 meeting of the Odessa School Board, the Parent Pre-school Co-operative’s president Stephen Walter expressed his thanks and relief at the board’s decision to incorporate the preschool into the Odessa School District. Walter said the co-op board wanted the school to take over operation of the pre-school to provide greater stability and less teacher turnover. Superintendent Suellen White described the proposal in which the district will partner with NEWESD (Educational Services District) 101 to provide pre...

The action west of Odessa was just a bit different this past weekend, as compared to two weeks ago, when thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts encamped at the corner of Irby Road and Highway 28. It wasn’t just improved weather – no rain, mostly sunny skies and only a slight breeze, that made the difference. The events of April 14 and 15 were smaller, quieter, and had an entirely different fragrance. Draft horse and mule enthusiasts convened at Keith Schafer’s farm about 5 miles...

Continued from last week Recently Odessa FFA Chapter members Caleb Singer, (son of Roland and Jennifer Singer of Odessa), Stacia Lesser (daughter of Tracy and Katherine Lesser of Marlin) and Alexis Burdick (daughter of Deric and Marra Schmierer of Odessa) competed in the Sub-District 9 Creed Career Development Event (CDE) at Wilson Creek. All three did an excellent job presenting the FFA Creed to a room full of spectators and judges (Odessa FFA members Max Greenwalt and...

Whether you love or hate the Canada goose, you would have to admit that the one pictured above looks like the real thing. In 1982, John M. Schmauder completed “The Wonder Deek,” as he titled it on the bottom of the platform bearing his carving, a decoy representating a very lifelike Canada goose. The goose is carved out of sugar pine, a wood particularly favored by woodworkers, according Mark Fulford, the current owner of the goose. Securely mounted on a wooden platform, it...

This week is National FFA Week, and as it does every year at this time, The Odessa Record, with the support of the Odessa and Harrington communities, salutes the high-school and eighth-grade students who dedicate themselves to this extra-curricular activity at their respective schools. Their advisor Erica Whitmore holds half-time positions at both schools, a situation that keeps her very busy and very often driving on the well-traveled road between the two schools. Through FFA, young people learn practical approaches to the...
