We are still trying our best to figure out what transpired at the Inland Empire Oilseeds facility just prior to Christmas. Well, actually, what transpired was that the workforce was laid off and the plant was shuttered. Chapter 7 bankruptcy was filed. What we don't know is the why. And with many issues to be resolved in bankruptcy court, the principals, on advice of counsel, are not yet talking about the why question. We attended this week's meeting of the Odessa Public Development Authority. We learned that there is at least...

We would like to start with a big hug for all of the support (financial and/or spiritual) that the Odessa community gave us for this amazing journey! No matter how great we are at describing the events, feelings, emotions and the people we met on our trip, we can never do it justice! We are convinced that you need to go and experience it for yourselves! The organization that we worked with was the 410 Bridge. They are such an awesome organization. They have five core...
September The Apache Pass wildfire grew from about 200 acres to about 18,000 acres in about 2 days because of wind. Extremely dry conditions in the scablands and plenty of dry grass for fuel contributed to the blaze. All available firefighters from the Odessa area responded the the blaze, which at its closest point to Odessa was burning about 12 miles north of town. The fire burned a lot of range land and fence posts north of Odessa, so the herds didn't have enough grazing land and some areas were without fences and the...

Lately I’ve been thinking about what advice the old me (that is, the me I am today) would give the young me. The first thing that popped into my head was, “Don’t wear shoes that hurt your feet.” Right after that came, “Don’t wear shoes that make you walk funny.” And right after that came, “Why would I listen to the old me when I wouldn’t listen to my parents?” I’ll admit, I have an obsession with shoes. So did my mother. It may be because, shaped the way I am, the only clothe...

The Old Town Hall in Odessa has served many functions over its lifetime. On January 10, approximately 15 to 20 townspeople gathered there to discuss the building’s future. Lise Ott is heading up an effort to either repurpose, refurbish or renovate the aging structure, which suffers now from roof leaks, crumbling concrete steps, broken and cracked windows and plumbing problems. Built in 1921, the facility opened December 21 of that year to house the offices of the town governme...

Here it is, as promised, my list of “must keep” cookbooks. If I had to pare my cookbook library to just twelve books, these would be my selections. With these twelve publications I would feel well equipped to prepare edible fare from just about any potable item that came my way. 1. Ann Pillsbury’s Baking Book, 1961 2. Fix It and Forget It Cookbook by Dawn J. Ranck and Phyllis Pellman Good, 2000 3 Searchlight Recipe Book, Household Magazine, 1945 4. Best of Country Cooking, Rei...
The operating hours of Odessa’s several saloons early in the last century were always a matter of controversy. No one seemed to care that they were open for business at 5 a.m., but there was concern about the closing time, which in 1912 was at 10:30 p.m. A petition circulated in January 1912 asking for a 9 p.m. closure was presented to the Odessa Town Council, bringing considerable opposition from both citizens and business operators. The Record gave this report in its issue of February 2, 1912: A petition asking for 9 o’cloc...

At the January 14 Odessa Town Council meeting, Mayor Doug Plinski got right to business by reading a letter of resignation from councilman Lynn Schmidt, dated December 31, 2012. Schmidt cited his recent move to a location outside the town limits, thereby making him ineligible to serve on the council as the reason for his resignation. He will continue to serve on some committees as a private citizen. Plinski then officially swore in Gail Kiesz as the new town clerk/treasurer...

Personally, I blame it all on Walt Disney. Seriously. Before Walt came along, fairy tales tended to be not just cautionary, but downright terrifying. I’m pretty sure that prior to being introduced to the happy-ever-after brand of storytelling perfected by those at the Disney company, I was too scared to do anything wrong. After all, being baked in someone’s oven or eaten by a wolf didn’t sound particularly pleasant. Then here came Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinde...
On Monday, January 21, we celebrate both Martin Luther King, Jr., Day and the inauguration of Barack Obama. Much has happened between the Civil Rights Movement, which began in 1954 with Brown vs. Board of Education, to the election of America’s first bi-racial president to another term in office. In April of 1968, King went to Memphis, Tennessee, to support the sanitation workers striking for better working conditions and a living wage. Not only had he fought discrimination against all minorities in this country, he also c...
