Mystery Don't you just love it when you can't trust your own eyes? Now you don't see them, and suddenly...when did that Linda Colbert sneak out there and place all of those straw bales and fall decorations up and down Third Street, Main Street, by the park and school? And surely she must have had a crew in order to execute such a quick placement service! No one seemed to know quite when it happened, just like so many previous years, but it was learned that her elves were...

After having served over two months in the Spokane county jail awaiting trial on the charge of using the United States mails for fraudulent purposes, the secretary of the "Odessa University," an institution located in a small rock cabin a few miles east of Odessa, was released from custody by Federal Judge Rudkin last Friday and later the United States department of...

The 46th annual Odessa Deutschesfest drew enthusiastic crowds to all of the events offered. Despite some relatively light rain during the Saturday morning parade and the threat of even windier conditions, the folks who attended appeared not to be bothered much at all. The rain cleared up by about noon, and the forecast winds were not as bad as had been predicted. The vendors we talked to said they were prepared for such contingencies and had well-secured booths. The rain that...

Deutschesfest trappings are packed away for another year, but already plans are being laid for 2017. Though the dirndls and lederhosen won’t likely be seen for another year, Germans from Russia culinary skills need not disappear. Kraut Ranza are great to have on hand for a quick, heat and serve meal. You may not care for sauerkraut, but any thick filling can be sealed in tender yeast dough, baked and served immediately, or cooled and frozen. Frozen bread dough may be used i...

The two-point conversion was run in by Marcus King, making the score 14-0. Catching the pass from Hunt, Brad Johnston...
Since arriving at Washington State University less than a year ago as the inaugural dean of WSU's Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, I've been largely focused on preparing for a site visit from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the accrediting body for educational programs at schools of medicine in the United States. That four-day visit occurred in late June. Now, we await the team's report based on documents we sent them in May and the facts they gathered from their visit. The full LCME meets in late...

Kraut Ranza, Cabbage Rolls and Apple Strudel have been filling the First Avenue corridor with delectable aromas the past few weeks as preparations for Deuschesfest swing into high gear. Most of the recipes are available in the Hospital Auxiliary Cookbook, Unser Tagelich Brot, The Staff of Life V, and are easy to adapt to home kitchens. The recipe for apple strudel, however makes dough for four, a bit much for one person to deal with alone. The recipe I use for one strudel...

Have you heard about Hilda? Hilda is the mascot of the Deutschesfest selected by a committee of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce to visit various places and promote Odessa's 46th annual celebration of its German-Russian heritage. By visiting the Odessa's Deutschesfest page on Facebook, readers can see pictures of just where Hilda has been and what she has been doing. And just who is Hilda? Why she is a rubber chicken, of course, the symbol of the beloved "Chicken Dance" that...

Escorted by the Washington State Patrol and another vehicle carrying flaggers, the rig was carrying the transformer from the site of its manufacture in Pocatello, Idaho to Wenatchee, presumably for installation at a power plant somewhere in the area. A second transformer will make the trip at about the same time next week, one of the truck drivers said. The rig supporting the transformer was...

Are you a friend of Fest mascot Hilda? Have you heard? Hilda, the new Fest mascot, has her very own Deutschesfest T-shirt. But supplies are limited. You’ll have to scurry if you want one. Experience Quilts has them, and the proceeds go to the Chamber’s marketing efforts. Hilda has not been traveling lately. She has stayed right here at home to oversee the last-minute preparations for the Fest. The Chamber-sponsored bench-decorating contest has resulted in some fabulous looking benches scattered throughout the downtown are...
Everyone has lost someone special. It might be a father, a mother, a child, a grandparent, a niece, a nephew or a friend. Everyone knows someone who now rests in a cemetery. Cemeteries are sacred places that home the ones we love after they are taken from this world. When someone dies, there is a huge hole in the hearts of those who loved them. The last thing that a family does for their loved one, is to place them in a very special and expensive custom-made box that depicts their taste and life, and the location of that...
