A week of rain showers was what one of the Stumpjumpers had asked for when he was in Odessa for the White Knuckle/Frostbite races the preceding weekend. He got his wish. There was no dust to be seen, so this race was different from every other Desert 100 that has been run on Wes and Faye King’s pasture a few miles outside of Odessa. Riders came across the finish platform with their bikes, and often themselves, covered in mud. The campsite was a muddy mess in places, and f...

When Matt and I went into business together I hadn't planned for it to go this way. Alder St. Fitness and Tanning, LLC was a dream of mine. I enjoyed running our business, seeing new faces and watching members achieve new goals. The smiles on their faces are what I enjoyed most about this business. Unfortunately, Matt and I grew further apart as Matt turned to abusive ways. I felt the great need to take my children to a safe and more positive place outside of Odessa. I had learned that Matt wasn't around and the gym wasn't...

Hi, here I am again. Continued from last week – the Kiesz Children….. Virgil remembers the following about living in the L-B-D: (10.) His dad had 14 horses; needed 12 of them when pulling heavy loads, deep plowing. His dad’s first tractor was a track-crawler type diesel. His dad’s first car, a used “rag top” Ford. Second car was a used “hard-top” with 4 doors, In 1934, the third car was a used Model-A-Ford/2 door and in 1939, it was his dad’s first “new” car - a Chevrolet with a small trunk attached at the rear. (11.) His d...
There was much excitement early in April when Odessa High School’s debate team won the state championship and the right to represent Washington in the national forensic contests in 1937. Although it’s a forgotten activity, debate teams flourished among the high schools of the region, and Odessa often had a winning team. The national competition in 1837 took place the first week in May in Jacksonville, Ill., and if Odessa’s state champions were to attend, it would be up to the citizens of the community to send them there...
Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 3/29/12: Apparently the markets weren’t willing to wait for a poor Friday report before breaking lower, as corn and wheat futures both tanked hard. It seems everyone’s pretty sure what the government’s going to have to say, and they weren’t willing to wait for confirmation before selling out. Exporters in Portland tucked tail and ran early, as soft white bids dropped 20 cents right off the bat, even when Chicago futures were only down a dime, then dropped a...
Odessa's got talent! What a great idea to have an all school musical. I can only imagine how much fun and hard work to get all those sets, which were so outstanding, as well as getting the students of all ages into the play. I enjoyed "Beauty and the Beast" as everyone did. Phyllis Weishaar Odessa PS - Who was that little shepherd boy? Editor's Note: The shepherd boy was played by second grader Drew Hardung, son of Joel and Danielle Hardung....

He congratulated the district on its willingness to share its success with neighboring districts and said this fact was a large part...
Another Odessa person was very nearly the victim of a scam recently, but fortunately for her she was cautious enough not to agree to giving out any money or trying to cash the fraudulent checks she was sent. Mary Van Rijn of Odessa often rents rooms in her home to those in need of low-cost housing. A friend convinced her to put an ad on Craigslist when one of the rooms became available for rent. She was soon contacted via email by a young woman who claimed to be someone who traveled a lot in her capacity as a worker for the R...

The Odessa Quilt Club’s annual ‘Quilt ‘til You Wilt’ event took place in the social hall of Heritage Chuch this past Monday, gathering together quilters from all over the area and beyong. The church basement hummed with activity, sewing machines whirred, irons stood silently at the read...

The Odessa Chamber’s “Business of the Year” award went this year to Odessa Foods. Managers Jeff and Debbie Norris were on hand to receive the plaque and the congratulations of the crowd for the many improvements and updates brought to the grocery store since new owners Bob and Bonnie Dewey hired the Norrises as managers. “Person of the Year” went to indefatiguable Kim King, who has labored on behalf of Odessa’s business community since her family moved to Odessa only a few...

Last Wednesday, March 14, a new electronic reader board was installed at the corner of Division Street and First Avenue. The sign was the brainchild of the Parent-Teacher Organization at the Odessa schools, which raised money for the project and organized its completion. Donations from businesses, individuals and other nonprofit organizations were also added to the funds generated by the PTO’s various fund-raising efforts. Mike Kuest took down the two metal artwork tigers that...

Here I go again. I wasn’t able to go to the Chamber Banquet Saturday. I can pretty much guarantee that no one would have wanted me there. I was assured by my spouse that it was a wonderful event; that the food was excellent and the program was entertaining. I still feel guilty, because I was supposed to be there. Fortunately, my very good friends Clark and Charlene Kagele were willing to change their weekend plans at the last minute so that Clark could fill in for me as M...
Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 3/15/12: Wait, there was a grain market today? I really think that the first two days of the NCAA tournament should be national holidays. Apparently there was someone trading grain today because Chicago grain futures finished with strong gains on the day. Egypt bought some U.S. and Canadian wheat in a surprise overnight tender, and Iran showed up on the export sales report again this week with a couple million more bushels of HRW. White wheat sales were...
On March 15th 2012 Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center had an exit conference with the Washington State Department of Health’s State Survey Team. Our hospital did extremely well, and it is apparent that OMHC is providing the highest quality of primary care possible to our community. We might not have every service available that larger healthcare facilities have, but the primary care services we do have are performed extremely well. The citizens of Odessa should be very proud to have such a high-quality healthcare facility i...
