As I was meeting with Town Marshal Mike Wren early Tuesday afternoon to review the week’s incident reports, a residential burglary was taking place on North Division Street. In broad daylight. This is to anyone that has ever dropped a dog or a cat off on a country road or is thinking of doing it assuming a farmer will care for or find a home for your unwanted pet!! What makes you think it is easier for a farmer to find a home for your pet versus you? It is a form of animal cruelty in my eyes! The Chamber of Commerce voted to retain all current officers and elected board members January 24, after they all said they were willing to continue. Officers who will be effective as of the March 17 Chamber banquet are: President Marlon Schafer, Vice President Lindsy Starkel, Secretary Michelle Melgren and Treasurer Larissa Zeiler. The Oilseed Crop Production Workshop held in the Odessa Community Center Tuesday, January 24, was a day-long effort to educate and encourage area farmers to add canola to their crop rotation with wheat. From its earliest years, Odessa was threatened by floods. The original town was platted in a flood plain in 1899. Nobody worried much about flood plains then, and as the town spread out from its first few blocks along First Avenue, homes were built along Crab Creek, which regularly over-flowed its banks at spring run-off time. The first really disastrous flood, however, occurred in 1909. It was followed by many more, which sometimes inundated the business district. Les Stehr, 78, passed away peacefully, January 11th at Harborview Medical Center after experiencing a stroke. Les was born in Odessa, Washington on May 14, 1933 to his parents Fred and Helen Stehr. Last Wednesday after school, two Odessa fifth graders, Ilan Coberly, and Jesse Berry were walking by the so-called “frog pond,” just up the hill from Coberly’s home and saw a dog stuck in the ice but alive. Coberly went out onto the ice and fell through but bravely kept going in icy water up to his chest until he reached the dog and pulled it free. The dog, Coda, belongs to Elizabeth Camp.
