  • What are you doubting?

    Pastor Jon Hayashi|Updated Apr 22, 2021

Our trust in a lot of things has gotten shaken over the last year. Misinformation, disinformation, lies and half-truths seem to be the norm anymore. When what we thought was solid belief comes into doubt, it rocks us to the core and we start doubting…everything. This applies to our faith. If I can’t trust what my eyes are seeing and my ears are hearing, how can I trust what I can’t see and hear? Does God really exist? Is His Word really true? Have I believed a lie this whole...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

Laura Estes, Special to The Record|Updated Apr 8, 2021

Last fall, a basil plant kept growing in a patio container. Due to inattention on my part, it went to seed. Now I have a nice little patch of minuscule seedlings sprouting up. If I remember to cover them at night, I should have plenty to transplant. Basil is a versatile herb, sliced or chopped fresh in salads or garnish, simmered in soups and sauces or baked into quiches and casseroles. With starter plants already in many garden shops, this herb is easy to have fresh for any...

  • The chaotic life of a Washington athletic director

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Mar 25, 2021

DAVENPORT – Tim Zeiler was going through the 2019-20 academic year just like he had his previous 15 years as the athletic director and P.E. teacher at the high school. Then, a little virus called COVID-19 hit, sports were cancelled, school was shut down and the last year has been unlike anything he ever expected to face. "It put us all on our heels, because we weren't trained to teach the way we were being asked to teach," Zeiler said. "Kids deserve the best, and online is n...

Borscht Soup is a spring menu item in my book. Though it was a Deutschesfest menu item for many years provided originally by the Odessa Baptist Women, the dish was most often made in springtime with fresh young dill. If you ever had one stalk of dill in your yard, you know it seeds prolifically, and there will be lots to thin out. Six-inch-tall dill is mild, yet full of flavor. Traditional borscht soup consists of a lot of broth with a minimal amount of vegetables and meat, in...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Laura Estes, Contributor|Updated Mar 11, 2021

March and St. Patrick's Day brings corned beef to mind for many folks doing the meal planning. Corning, the old time method of preserving meat before refrigeration came along is done for us and the product is readily available in the markets. The method is not difficult but our modern standards require refrigeration and 10 days of curing time. Most of us don’t want to sacrifice the refrigerator space, but the end result is worth doing at least once in your lifetime. There a...

  • Juneteenth steps toward state holiday status

Sydney Brown, Washington State Journal|Updated Mar 4, 2021

OLYMPIA – Rep. Kirsten Harris-Talley, D-Seattle, often sees her grandmother’s features when she looks in the mirror. She thinks of how her grandmother, a woman of color, experienced systemic racism and fought for a better life despite societal barriers in rural Missouri only a few generations before Harris-Talley. Harris-Talley told the House of Representatives Feb. 25 she supported Juneteenth as a state holiday because of the existence of structural racism in the country today. She said what may seem like a simple acknowledg...

  • The Local

Lise Ott, Special to The Record|Updated Mar 4, 2021

Well, this is embarrassing. A few short weeks after deciding to keep everyone apprised of local activities, I have decided to stop. Now that I am fully removed from the former quilt shop, I have no easy (emphasis on easy) access to the internet. It would cost way too much to get wireless Internet to my house. Dial-up is incredibly frustrating because of the antiquity of the phone system in Irby, and everybody I know tells me I would not like satellite. OK. I would probably...
