March and St. Patrick's Day brings corned beef to mind for many folks doing the meal planning. Corning, the old time method of preserving meat before refrigeration came along is done for us and the product is readily available in the markets. The method is not difficult but our modern standards require refrigeration and 10 days of curing time. Most of us don’t want to sacrifice the refrigerator space, but the end result is worth doing at least once in your lifetime. There a...

DAVENPORT – The number of COVID-19 cases is down to three in Lincoln County as of press time, but the death counts suffered in big cities like New York and Los Angeles has left many funeral homes overrun in the past year. OLYMPIA – Rep. Kirsten Harris-Talley, D-Seattle, often sees her grandmother’s features when she looks in the mirror. She thinks of how her grandmother, a woman of color, experienced systemic racism and fought for a better life despite societal barriers in rural Missouri only a few generations before Harris-Talley. Harris-Talley told the House of Representatives Feb. 25 she supported Juneteenth as a state holiday because of the existence of structural racism in the country today. She said what may seem like a simple acknowledg...

Well, this is embarrassing. A few short weeks after deciding to keep everyone apprised of local activities, I have decided to stop. Now that I am fully removed from the former quilt shop, I have no easy (emphasis on easy) access to the internet. It would cost way too much to get wireless Internet to my house. Dial-up is incredibly frustrating because of the antiquity of the phone system in Irby, and everybody I know tells me I would not like satellite. OK. I would probably...
1 years ago Mar. 4, 1921 Secretary C.E. The warm weather that has prevailed during the past week has set the baseball bug buzzing and as a result a baseball meeting has been called at the Kunkel barber shop next Monday night....

Recipes do fail. Recently I tried a recipe for orange cake with fresh orange syrup. It was circulating the Internet last December. Taking into consideration different tastes among folks, this recipe still falls in the flop category. You won’t find the recipe repeated here, and it will soon disappear from my Pinterest “To Try” board. It is very, very heavy, dense, overly sweet, yet lacking flavor. You can eat it, but it’s not worth wasting calories on, nor time figurin...

If there was ever a year in history that rivaled 2020's embrace for the rapture, it would have to be the year of 1918. It was a year that, like 2020, saw our country in the middle of a global pandemic, while also still in the midst of battling World War 1. Historians suggest crime in the United States decreased that year, just like it supposedly did in 2020, but if you lived in Davenport at that time you'd probably have a different opinion. In addition to the world events of t...

1 years ago Feb. 18, 1921 The masque ball given by Odessa members of the Elks fraternity at the Community Hall Friday night was unquestionably the social event of the season for the dancing public. Nevertheless, the crowd that came filled the hall and there were many fine costumes. The Odessa Gun Club lost its...

Listening to young people talk about food, cooking and recipes can be informative and entertaining. With most families spending more time at home, children are taking an interest in meal and snack preparation. Some love baking cookies. Others like helping with meal prep. One even told me, they should never be allowed in a kitchen unsupervised, as there was danger they would set the kitchen on fire. The most interesting was a young brother and sister telling me all about...

There are more new books at the Odessa library as of this week. Most of them are pure escapism, which isn’t a bad thing during times like these. You can read that as meaning “pandemic” or just “winter in Eastern Washington” as you wish. One book, though, may just be one of the best books you’ll probably never read. Our recent (and seemingly endless) election cycle has illustrated the deep divisions running through our society. I am often uncomfortable to discover that people...
