Each year, the Washington State Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons awards somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen scholarships for outstanding students across the state. For the size of our state, not that many are awarded. This year Elizabeth Larson of Odessa High School was awarded the Grand Lodge Legacy Award in the amount of $2,000. Over the past approximately eight years, this is the third time an Odessa student has been awarded one of the few scholarships from Grand Lodge, via our local Masons in Odessa Lodge No....

On Sunday, May 14, Odessa's Heritage Church honored Delores Cook as its long-time church organist. She has been playing for as long as anyone can remember. She started playing the piano at five years old and eventually added the organ to her skill set. Delores Schorzman married Delbert Cook on October 15, 1949 and became a member of the church in 1951. Recipes that include ingredients used in an unexpected or non-traditional way intrigue me. Maybe necessity was the mother of invention or, as is often the case now, dietary needs create new ingredient combinations. Charlene Kagele served Blueberry Squares at a recent quilters gathering. The recipe calls for a can of chickpeas (garbanzo beans) which replace some of the fat one would expect to find in crumb crust. She found the recipe on Allrecipes.com. Blueberry Squares Crust:...

I am sitting here at my dining room table looking out the window as I prepare to write this column. My thoughts go back to May 24, 2016, the day we moved to Odessa. In my first Meet your neighbors column in November 2016, I mentioned the warmth and love we felt from the wonderful people in this town and how we felt welcomed as we got out into the community. The only thing that has changed from that time until now is that things are even better. Thank you again to our Odessa...

It's the morning of Saturday, April 29, of Spring Fling in Odessa, and I'm getting ready to follow through on a commitment I made just a few days before. I am meeting Sean Owsley, lead singer of the Blue Mustangs band and the morning news anchor for KHQ-6 news in Spokane to conduct my first solo interview. I'm not nervous, which was exactly what I had hoped for. The main reason I chose him for my first interview is that he seemed like a very down-to-earth person. I had been ir...

For those who would like to stitch in company with others, there are several FREE regular stitching activities open to all, weekly and monthly, in our town. First, there’s the first Friday of each month “Sew Much Fun” session at 5 p.m. in the Exp...

Over the last several years, Almira Community Church has hosted an annual Men’s Conference called Anvil. Unfortunately, they were unable to put another Anvil conference together this year. We strive to make things better or run more smoothl...

The January 29 community forum on the future of Deutschesfest resulted in lots of feedback and ideas for improvement. The comments received were compiled last week by the author and Lise Ott. Biergarten Quality of bands has not improved – has really declined. Whiskey D & the 8 Balls cleared the Biergarten out last year. Raise the gate $5, $10, $15 – people will pay it (Le...
In spring when the smell of flowers fills the air, I love to watch and stare, as the hummingbirds fill the air. They dart, first here, then there, as they fly so fast through the air. Hummingbirds are almost as light as air, so they can fly high and fast without a care. Always in a hurry to get somewhere, as they almost seem to float on air, sucking up nectar rom everywhere. Pat Gamache 8/20/15...

Avocado Ice Cream? My first thought was “that is a horrible thing to do to an avocado”, but apparently this is all the rage in several east coast areas. One restaurant serves avocado ice cream on toast, and according to the news article, it sells out fast so people line up early to get this treat. Have any of you readers tried this interesting concoction? A search on Pinterest turned up several recipes with quite varied ingredients, and judging from these recipes, it appears i...
