  • Council still debating fence definition

    Updated Jul 23, 2014

At Monday night’s meeting of the Odessa Town Council, the rewritten draft ordinance defining a “fence” was seen by council member Frank White as too restrictive and likely to cause more problems for the council than it solved. He asked that the issue be tabled again for further discussion, and the other council members concurred. A variance was granted for the revised request for a backyard fence on Amende Drive to provide running room for the owner’s dog. A permit for a reroof and new fence on east Third Avenue was also ap...

  • Locals in the limelight

    KATHY TAYLOR|Updated Jul 31, 2013

Some people in the world are really good gift givers. We all know the type. They find just the right gift at just the right time. Dale Winfrey takes this to a whole new level. He truly gave the gift that keeps on giving, the gift of a kidney. On March 13 of this year, he was wheeled into the surgical unit and donated a kidney to local resident Lois Hubbard. They were cousins and had kept in touch over the years. Their grandmothers were sisters. His mother had set up Lois’ parents, Clarence and Helen, on their first date. Dale...

  • Locals in the limelight- Eddy Kern

    KATHY TAYLOR|Updated Jul 24, 2013

My interview target this week is not an easy man to catch up with. Even though he is “retired”, he currently serves as chairman for the County Noxious Weed Board and also as chairman for the County Retired Public Employees Council. Driving around town in his signature blue Toyota 5 speed, he is typically running errands and going out to check on his farm. The amazing thing…he is 97 years old. • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Laura Estes|Updated Jul 9, 2013

Odessa seems to be overrun with skunks this year. Monday of this week I saw three skunks, all in different areas of town. To my way of thinking, that is three skunks too many. Eradicating skunks is probably not a kitchen subject, but de-skunking dogs, other animals and items, could be. Ingredients for a good de-skunking solution are mostly found in the kitchen. Leanna Schafer’s dogs had an unpleasant meeting with a skunk several years ago. She found this recipe on A...
