Community kitchen will be ready for fest 2013

At Tuesday noon’s meeting of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, community kitchen chairperson Lindsy Starkel reported that Phase 1 of the project is on schedule to be completed by the first week in August. On Monday, July 29, the oven will be moved from The Kraut Haus into the new kitchen. At the end of July, the sinks, dishwasher and ice machine will be installed, and the electrical work will be completed.

Starkel said electrician Larry Gustafson has been working very hard to get all of the wiring done on schedule. He also volunteered to cut the new doorway for the biergarten entrance. Starkel said she also hoped that asphalt could be put down at the back of the building prior to Fest, but that it could wait until later if need be.

Civic groups needing to use the kitchen to make their food for Fest should be able to schedule their work days any time after about August 1.

Need for help critical

Chamber president Marlon Schafer said the need for volunteers to form work parties and to take on the empty chairmanship positions is becoming critical. Fest is less than two months away, and there is much work to do before the visitors begin arriving.

1. Chamber is seeking an advertising chairperson to arrange for publicity for Fest. Korianne Scheller has been the chairperson for the past several years and would like someone else to take over. She has gone forward with most of the legwork for this year, but someone should be shadowing her now and learning what needs to be done. The Chamber’s administrative assistant Jennifer Martin is also helping Scheller with last-minute advertising tasks.

2. A biergarten co-chair is needed to shadow Dejay Buck this year and take over as chairperson next year. This person is responsible for ordering supplies such as cups, napkins, peanuts, etc., arranging for security personnel and working with the beverage distributor to provide a mix of beverages that will appeal to most of the visitors. Coordination with the sausage crew in the kitchen, the volunteer bartenders and floor servers, as well as the people manning the entrances and exits is also essential. It is an important job that is also a lot of fun, according to past chairpersons.

3. Someone is needed to handle scheduling of the biergarten workforce for the four days that the biergarten is open. This job requires phoning past workers to see whether they are willing to volunteer again, trying to schedule them at times they find desirable and finding a group of standby workers who can fill in on short notice if someone gets sick or does not appear for their shift for some reason. Peggy DeWulf has done this job for several years but is now busy organizing the Fun Run with the boys in her Cub Scout pack.

Schafer will soon be forming work parties to begin going over benches and tables at the community center to see what needs repair, replacement or scrapping.

The biergarten entrance sign was repaired last year but is already in need of repairs again. Schafer suggested obtaining a new metal art sign that could simply have spotlights aimed at it during hours of operation of the biergarten.

It is nearly time for Fest again. Where, oh where, did the time go?
