Ruth Ann’s Mother, Marie Suhrbier A dear lady there in Wilson Creek, sweet, gentle and so kind, lost her son, her house and husband, but she never lost her mind. Sadly---out on the family farm, Marie lost her only son. Ken was in his teens, so handsome, honest, full of fun. It humbled each and everyone, in our little town, quite small. One couldn’t find a dry eye, young or old, as I recall. Then---just two very short years later, came the ‘57 flood. It filled our town with water, it covered everything with mud. Marie...

The family of Edna Janke Jorgenson celebrated with her this past weekend as she turned 100 years old. An open house was held Saturday, April 7, at Christ Lutheran Church in Odessa to celebrate this milestone birthday. Friends and relatives from near and far gathered to wish her many more birthdays to come. Five generations of family members were also present, including Edna’s son Allen Janke and wife Sue (Lubold) Janke, their daughter Rena and husband Pete Goforth with t...

Daffodils blooming must mean it is spring, despite a chill north wind and ground too cold for planting potatoes. Onions and peas should do alright if your ground has been dry enough for tilling. I planted some onions in a flower pot, following a tip I saw on Pinterest. Take the top you cut from green onions when you are only using the white part and stick it about 1/2 inch deep in potting soil. I used some of the onion plants left over from planting my row in the garden. When...
Odessa Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has taken on an urgent project, setting aside temporarily, several other projects on their docket. Sudden changes had to be made in cable television providers for the hospital resulting in an unavoidable 100% increase in cost to the hospital. The Hospital Board authorized purchasing the basic plan, but in order for residents to receive all the channels desired, especially sports, an additional channel receiver case costing $2,400 was needed. Since the main goal of the Auxiliary is to “make t...

God's promise to Abraham, fulfilled in this generation! America---IS---Israel, it has become that---"Great Nation!" Said Daniel the Prophet, "Many shall run to and fro!" We've...

Hi, here I am again. Continued from last week – the Kiesz Children….. Virgil remembers the following about living in the L-B-D: (10.) His dad had 14 horses; needed 12 of them when pulling heavy loads, deep plowing. His dad’s first tractor was a track-crawler type diesel. His dad’s first car, a used “rag top” Ford. Second car was a used “hard-top” with 4 doors, In 1934, the third car was a used Model-A-Ford/2 door and in 1939, it was his dad’s first “new” car - a Chevrolet with a small trunk attached at the rear. (11.) His d...
Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 3/29/12: Apparently the markets weren’t willing to wait for a poor Friday report before breaking lower, as corn and wheat futures both tanked hard. It seems everyone’s pretty sure what the government’s going to have to say, and they weren’t willing to wait for confirmation before selling out. Exporters in Portland tucked tail and ran early, as soft white bids dropped 20 cents right off the bat, even when Chicago futures were only down a dime, then dropped a...
Hi, here I am again. Continued from last time: The Kiesz Children. Farm life for Gordon and Virgil was hard. The Kiesz family usually did everything by themselves. Never used extra help except during harvest when one person was usually needed to help out. Of course there were years when the crop consisted of one - two bushels per acre, when extra help was not needed. It was the early 1930's, the depression was still on. Virgil and Gordon milked cows and cared for them, cleaned the barn, collected the manure inside, outside...
Alder St. Fitness & Tanning is the latest Odessa business to cease operations. Patrons arrived early one morning for their daily workout to find a sign on the door advising them that the business was closed. A phone number was left for them to call to collect any personal items they may have left in the facility. One of those patrons was Tom Clavel, who told The Record about it. He said he hoped some other organization or individual would take it over and not allow the assets to be sold piecemeal....

Sharpen your sweet tooth for an entire column of desserts. My advise is to use this weeks column in moderation. Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Bars were served at a recent women's gathering. Lecia Fink found this recipe on Pinterest. The recipe suggests using a food processor, but a blender and a mixer will get the job done just as well. Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Bars Base: 1/2 stick unsalted butter (1/4 cup), plus extra to grease pan 2 Tbsp granulated sugar 3/8 tsp ground...

Due to the high cost of fresh crab this spring, the Odessa Lions Club offered a “Surf and Turf” dinner featuring steak and lobster instead. The dinner was held March 10, and drew over 200 diners. Crews were kept busy in the Heimbigner addition to the Community Center as well as outside the main kitchen, cooking both entree choices on grills. The Lions serve the community in many ways, and the annual dinner is one of the more entertaining. They also host the Turkey Car...
Melissa Greenwalt, daughter of Brad and Judy Greenwalt of Odessa, was named to the Dean's List at the University of Idaho for Fall Quarter, 2011. Students who maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher while carrying a minimum of 12 credits are eligible for the award. Greenwalt was a 2010 graduate of Odessa High School, and was class valedictorian....
A new display is coming soon to the Odessa Historisches Museum, if enough contributors can be found: Odessa High School class rings. Over the years, each member of the graduating class has had the option of purchasing a class ring bearing the year of graduation. Though not as popular as it once was, the buying of class rings is still an option today. Paul Scheller of the Odessa Historical Society thought those rings and the changing styles through the years would make a nice display for the summer months when the museum is...
The 94th annual Spokesman-Review Inland Northwest Trapshoot contest officially ended as of Sunday, February 26. The combined Marlin-Odessa teams finished in second place, one point behind the Colton Gun Club and one point ahead of Garfield-St. John in Division I. The Odessa Gun Club finished out the season with an extra day of shooting March 4, including a few extra contests and individual rankings. Landon Lobe, Jim Smith and Tyler Smith all turned in perfect scores of 25. Nick Tebow and Ryan Lewis shot 24, and Randy Gies,...
Odessa Record subscriber Larry Fisher of Spokane continues his series of articles on the history of the Batum/Lauer area (where his wife, the former Joyce Kiesz, grew up). Hi, here I am again. The next articles presented about relatives from the L-B-D are because if I don’t, I will be asked to leave my Spokane home permanently. I will find all my possessions out in the street. Clothes cut in pieces, computer destroyed, truck tires slashed, money source gone. I guess, I would be “homeless,” “penniless.” Therefore the next...

Soup is always in season, making it the ideal menu staple for times when we seem to have all four seasons in any given day. Soup can be as easy as opening a can and heating the contents, or involve lots of chopping, sautéing, deglazing, boning and mincing. Dan Wilcox, The Odessa Record website guru, submitted a recipe for Chicken Noodle Soup that falls in the less labor intensive category. Usually I rewrite recipes into the standard formula for recipe presentation, but Dan...
A Mystical Late Winter Sky A chinook from the south, brings warmth to the breeze Naked limbs whip gently, on thin skeletal trees Like a dagger of crystal, a jagged icicle thaws As Mother Nature obeys, her own unwritten laws The earth has lain dormant, for a season or so Now hear the faint trickle---of cold melting snow Like veins in a leaf, miniature rivers are formed Carving canyons minute, in wheat fields, sun warmed Soon the dry gulch runs swollen, with turbulent waters of mud I examine the wild bush---and see it’s s...
Going into Week 8 of the annual Spokesman Review Trapshoot, Marlin-Odessa still sat in second place, one point behind the Colton Gun Club and one point ahead of Garfield-St. John. Marlin Changeable weather still saw large numbers of trapshooters at the Marlin Gun Club February 26 when 62 shooters turned out in 39 squads. The only 25 was shot by Alex Ames. Shooting 24 were Dave Lang, Bill James, Mark Iksic, Doug Starkel, Mike Christ, Camden Eckhart and Kurt Moore. Scott Mortimer, Ken Thompson, Mark Edwins and Donna Thrall all...
Hi, here I am again. Continued from last week “The Schibels.” On 09 April 1919, Henry Schibel married Katherine “Katie” Frick. Katie was age 19, Henry age 22. Katie’s parents were Heinrich “Henry” & Anna Margaret Schafer Frick. At the time, the Fricks were living in Adams Co. TS 20N, R31E, Section 2, about 1-1/2 mile north of Moody and almost 2 ½ miles southwest of the Schibel farm. I have been told the Fricks settled in the area around 1900; that they were the last in the area to farm with horses which was toward the end...

Presidents’ Day is February 20th, and though that day commemorates all United States Presidents, we still see the occasional reference to our first president, George Washington and his chopping down of the cherry tree. For many decades, cherry pie was pre-requisite when celebrating his birthday. Cherry Raspberry Pie was featured in the July 2011 issue of Family Circle Magazine. The sweet-tart filling pairs nicely with a half butter, half shortening pastry, and though a bit s...
