They crisscross the heavens, long silk threads of white Spun in the bowels of jet engines, of sleek planes in flight Like woven strands of white twine, they cling high in the air I often look up and gaze, in awe and just stare From behind the wings, those thin white billows pour High in the blue yonder, see those Silver Birds soar Like old wagon wheel ruts, they mark up the blue sky And were never before seen, until man learned to fly These trails in the sky, minute crystals of ice Pasted onto the blue, with no pattern...

Arrival of the New year has been celebrated and resolutions have been made. Kitchen wise, some resolutions I’ve heard are: waste less food, prepare more home cooked meals, and less fat, sugar, salt. Readers, this is your column, I just take what you send me and attempt to put it in an entertaining and educational form. I do kitchen test all the recipes before printing, as I want to be sure the ingredient listing is correct and it helps me expand the instructions, making the r...

Holiday cooking can get hectic without planning ahead. Now would be a good time to revisit Mise-en-place. No, this is not a town in the south of France, but a French phrase, meaning “put in place”. The practice of putting everything in place in the kitchen, clearing the workspace, assembling all ingredients and utensils before starting to cook will make time in the kitchen more enjoyable. Clear the counters Read through the recipe Assemble ingredients. Gather bowls, pots and t...
Odessa Record subscriber Larry Fisher of Spokane continues his series of articles on the history of the Batum/Lauer area (where his wife, the former Joyce Kiesz, grew up.) Hi, here I am again. Continued from last week “The Schibels.” Don told me “his father changed over to the tractor around 1935 when farming started to improve.” By 1936, farming was better and in 1939 when WWII started, the crops were very good and the price was a lot better than it had been for quite a while. The “Great Depression” was over. In a 1935 TOR...
One person dies every 19 minutes, unintentionally, from prescription drug abuse. Another staggering statistic: one in five teens has abused prescription medications. Generation Rx, a group stemming from the American Public Health Association, is an initiative that has been put together to prevent the misuse and abuse of prescription medications. Generation Rx and Washington State University's School of Pharmacy have teamed up to do something about this growth epidemic. There will be a presentation about prescription...

I have been told the Fricks settled in the area around 1900, and that they were the last in the area to farm with horses which was toward the end of the 1930s...

Threats that morning snow showers may materialize by Thanksgiving Day have been just that; threats (so far). Snow or not, it is always a good time for soup. Vicki Strang recently shared her recipe for Gypsy Soup, a highly seasoned vegetable mixture that would easily accommodate the addition of leftover turkey and feed a dozen or so football fans on game day. Gypsy Soup 4 Tbsp olive oil 2 cups chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped celery 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 cups peeled, diced...

Hi, here I am again. On the west side of Kagele road, on the west edge of the L-B-D in Lincoln Co. TS 21N, R31E, Section 36 is the Schibel farm. The attachment of the Schibel name to the farm started with Georg Peter before 1911, then Henry, Don and finally Jeff today (2010). One of Don’s sisters and her husband also farmed on the land for a period of time. Talking with Don Schibel and looking at the Schibel obituaries, I learned that in Russia about 1888, Georg Peter & K...
