The Odessa Fire Department's equipment auction last Saturday, February 27, was a big draw, as rigs from near and far poured into town for the 9 a.m. start. Much of the farming equipment was from the estate of local farmer/rancher Mike Connolly, with additional items from the (Brian) Homberg Farms estate. The Odessa Food Bank will be filling its shelves with plenty of new items following last Saturday evening’s taco feed held at the Zion Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The holiday meals provided by the food bank late in the year tend to reduce its holdings, so the beginning of the new year finds the shelves getting rather empty. On February 24, the Odessa School Board held a workshop in the district office for the purpose of discussing policies and procedures. The Grant County Health District is working to conclude its investigation of two Grant County residents’ deaths in February 2016. Washington State Public Health Laboratory recently confirmed that one of the submitted specimens was positive for botulism toxin. This information was sufficient to confirm the disease in both cases because they are from the same household with similar classic botulism symptoms. Dog licenses are required by an ordinance of the Town of Odessa. Each license is good for one year and is renewal each January. The purpose of the licensing fee is to help cover the cost of finding lost dogs or corraling loose dogs and returning them to their owners. The kennel for stray animals that belongs to the town has fallen into disrepair, and efforts to replace it are currently at a standstill. While the fishing season at the Bureau of Land Management’s Coffeepot Lake opens on March 1, the boat launch area will remain closed due to unusually low water levels to prevent boat trailers from getting stuck in the deep mud. The Odessa Community Closet started in January 2014 as a ministry of Zion-Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The goal of the Closet was to help provide gently used clothing and shoes, free of charge, to people in Odessa and the surrounding community. Members of the Odessa community donate clothing, which volunteers sort and organize.
