Harrington Christmas bazaar And what to my amazement was all that commotion and clatter; I rose from my seat and raced into the streets to see what was the matter. Sirens, more and louder sirens, closer and faster, as though the whole city were in a disaster. No Prancer, no Dixon, but oh, what a sight; Santa hanging on to the rear of the fire engine so tight. Children were rushing to see who was coming, and before long Santa was taking his seat in the opera house lobby....

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office and Royal City Police are investigating three complaints of fraudulent phone calls from an 800 number. The caller claims to be from the Grant PUD and requests the person called immediately send money or have their power shut off. Today’s victims were three churches in south Grant County, one in Schawana, two in Royal City. None of the churches sent money; rather, they called the police. Clearly these calls are a scam. If you receive a call from anyone demanding money, ask them for a call bac...

Last week Tuesday, members of the Odessa community gathered in the atrium of the hospital to bid farewell to physician's assistant DJ Jones. He was recruited to join the Odessa staff in May of 2014. Since that time he and his wife has been searching for a suitable home to purchase or a property on which to build. Neither effort bore fruit, and ultimately the couple decided they were best off staying put in the Cheney area. Jones will work at Sacred Heart Medical Center in...
The Affordable Care Act’s health insurance exchanges opened for business in November. Now, millions of Americans who do not get coverage through work have the opportunity to shop for policies that will take effect in 2016. But they only have a few months to do so. This open enrollment period will end on January 31, 2016. Those who currently lack insurance should sign up without delay. And those who have had coverage this year should investigate whether there’s a better deal available to them for coverage that will kick in...

The only evening performances are on the Fridays of December 4 and 11, at the earlier start time of 7 p.m. There are two matinees on...
As Avista and the communities impacted by the November 17 wind storm try to return to “business as usual,” many will never forget the devastation, destruction and personal damage left behind by Mother Nature’s near-hurricane force winds. By 3:45 a.m. Friday, November 27, power was fully restored to the nearly 180,000 customers who were out of power at the height of the storm. It took almost 10 days of around-the-clock restoration efforts by up to 132 Avista, contract and mutual aid crews from six western states and Canad...
Dear Friends and Neighbors, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! I wanted to send one final interim update before the start of the 60-day 2016 legislative session on January 11. As you know, I’ve been incredibly busy this interim meeting with hundreds of folks, touring businesses, and attending meetings that help inform me about the issues our district and state are facing. It is an honor to serve as your state representative, and I look forward to continuing the good work we have started. I recently returned f...
There is a misconception about the Lincoln County Fair and its funding. The fair is funded by a few different sources. The first is the Department of Agriculture, which supplies approximately $32,000 (the money that is up for review every two years). Additional funding of $25,000 comes from our own county. The rest comes from winter vehicle storage, off-season events, signs purchased, wristbands and entry to the fair. The Lincoln County Fair Advisory Board struggles yearly to put on a good fair with limited funds. A...

Windstorm Winds had been predicted to range near 65 mph on Tuesday and with that intensity Harrington was fortunate to have only minor damages to homes with roofing being the major complaint. One homeowner reported a limb lying on his roof. Dust was thick in the air all day, sometimes resembling dense fog. In the downtown business district, signs and awnings were challenged, with only one awning sent to the ground. The newly fixed roof on the former Harrington Haus was seen flapping in the wind all across the west end of the...

On July 22 and 29, 2015, the Attorney General’s Office received letters from members of the State House of Representatives and the State Senate, respectively, requesting that the office conduct an investigation of Planned Parenthood. Attorney General Bob Ferguson has sent responses to both houses, enclosing a memorandum that states, in sum, that the Attorney General’s Office did not find any evidence whatsoever to support the allegations that Planned Parenthood is operating in violation of state or federal law. In his res...

In 2014, Americans donated an estimated $350 billion to charities. A generous country we are, but how much of those funds actually benefit those in need? You might not want to know. There are good charities. There are bad charities. And there are the worst charities. America’s “worst” charities have gained their titles by how much they raise in donations for their cause, and how little of that money goes towards the same cause. As these deceptive organizations ask you for your financial support, many lie about where or to wh...

Copies of the pictures were put...
In Washington state, low mountain snowpack has caused the governor to declare a statewide drought emergency for this summer. However, for the majority of the growers in the Odessa Subarea region that use groundwater, these conditions are nothing new. Whereas most of the potatoes in the state are irrigated with surface water from the Columbia and Snake Rivers, farmers in the Odessa Subarea face drought-like conditions every year. The Odessa region is an outstanding region for producing potatoes, and the production in this area...
