Most Lincoln County residents have driven along US Highway 2 extending from Reardan to Almira and passing through Davenport, Creston and Wilbur. Some people notice that all of Highway 2 is bordered by agricultural fields. What people don’t always notice are the field borders that farmers install along their fields. How does the public benefit from what the farmers are doing in their fields? Field borders in particular provide cleaner and better structured roadsides. The established grasses create a stronger ground s...

Lincoln County Commissioner After seven months of waiting for an attorney general opinion, we finally have answers to our questions. All of the questions we asked revolve around RCW 46.09.360 which states that counties have the authority to open roads to “off-road vehicles.” Counties do have the authority to designate roads with a speed limit exceeding 35 mph for ORV use, but the statute specifically excludes “wheeled all-terrain vehicles.” So, the crazy part is that a four-...

The former Harrington Haus is finally drying out with the new owner, John Dempsey, working long, hard hours and continuously ventilating the structure. Several on-lookers contemplated the removal of the old pool table which Dempsey was not interested in trying to preserve. At one point, Gene Dietrich had stipulated that he wanted to remove the pool table prior to the signing of the papers, but in the final analysis, Dietrich was not willing to remove it. Leaks in the roof for years had damaged the table, making it necessary...

Last week our school band was able to make their journey to Disneyland in Southern California. This trip was the culmination of over a year of intense planning, fundraising and practicing. Through the hard work of music director David Nighswonger and the support of the Harrington school board, the band took a long, 24-hour bus ride from Harrington to Anaheim last Wednesday. Students were amazed by Los Angeles traffic, palm trees and the sheer amount of people as we made our...

Our front page photo from the going-away party for Monica Deife left off the name of Susan Jensen at the far right in the back row. The editor was very much under the weather last week, and unfortunately the paper suffered as a result. Last week’s photograph accompanying the baseball story incorrectly identified the subject. The pitcher in that photo was Colton Hunt, son of Stacey Hunt of Ritzville and Amy Hunt of Odessa. Our apologies to Susan and to Colton....

FACT: An estimated 32% of fatal car crashes involve an intoxicated driver or pedestrian. Drinking alcohol and driving simply do not go together. The human brain has to deal with many things and process countless data all the time. Alcohol affects attentiveness and one’s ability to make quick decisions on the road, react to changes in the environment and execute specific, often difficult maneuvers behind the wheel. When drinking alcohol, driving becomes dangerous – and is potentially lethal! Despite increased public awareness,...
The Desert 100 race weekend put on by the Stumpjumpers Motorcycle Club has come and gone. Similar to Odessa's Deutschesfest, the event takes months of preparation and then is all over within three days, except for the cleanup, of course. Many of the race organizers are still working out at the site, cleaning up and making sure to pick up all the stakes and ribbons marking the course. Based on pictures posted by Odessa...

As the filing date approaches for next fall’s general election, incumbents and interested candidates must begin thinking about whether or not to throw their hats into the political ring. Mayor Doug Plinski announced at Monday night’s meeting of the Odessa Town Council that he will not run for another term as Odessa’s mayor. He has served for the past eight years and said he wanted to have more “grandpa time.” His wife, Nancy, will also soon retire from her job at Odessa’s hospital, and the couple will want to spend some time...
The official filing period for the fall elections will be held May 11 through May 15, 2015. All offices are subject to both Primary and General Elections. If more than two candidates file for a position, the Primary Election would narrow the field to two candidates who would then appear on the General Election ballot. The filing fee of 1% of the annual salary shall accompany the Declaration of Candidacy. There is no fee if the office sought is without a fixed salary. Anyone wishing to file may do so at the Lincoln County...
Ever wonder what your kids are up to while they are free to roam the town of Odessa, that safe and stable small-town community? Well, some of them are getting into a little mischief, and parents need to be aware of it. Concerned citizens have contacted the newspaper to report small makeshift bridges being installed in Crab Creek to make it easier to cross without getting wet. Instead of using the town’s actual bridges, built at great expense to provide access for all to all parts of the community, some youngsters can’t be...
