"Fall sports" practices, including football, volleyball, cross country and girl's soccer, began Wednesday in Davenport and Reardan. Athletes were mandated to wear masks, but were thrilled to get back on the field and court. Competitions will begin next week after the East region, including Lincoln County, was cleared to move to Phase 2 of Gov. Jay Inslee's re-opening plan Feb. 11....
DAVENPORT—“Fall sports” may finally be arriving. Athletic directors in Davenport, Reardan and Harrington have created schedules for sports their schools are participating in. All games are subject to cancellation or movement, depending on whether the “East” region is in Phase 2 of the governor’s re-opening plan or not. Only cross country is approved to compete in Phase 1. Most practices begin Feb. 10. The WIAA recently ruled that Phase 1 practices, while restrictive, can count toward the practice count needed for competition...
ODESSA – Odessa High School Athletic Director Bruce Todd told The Record last week that high school volleyball and football teams were scheduled to begin a six-week season on February 1. Practice for both sports was underway, and schedules were being worked out by the athletic directors of the area schools. Junior-high football was set to begin February 8 and junior-high volleyball on February 16. Wilson Creek was to combine with Odessa for the football season, and Harrington will join Odessa for other selected sports. S...

ODESSA – At least one athletics organization is ranking the Odessa Tigers as the top 1B football team to beat in Washington state. In a preseason ranking released earlier this week by SBLive.com, Odessa is ranked as the top 8-man football team in the state, followed by league rival Almira/Coulee-Hartline. The Tigers went 13-0 in the fall 2019 season and have been waiting to get on the gridiron to defend their state title. Odessa running back Marcus King graduated, but q...

DAVENPORT – Fall sports may be on the horizon, if COVID-19 metrics cooperate. District 7 athletic directors, which include those in the NE2B and NE1B leagues, met Jan. 22 and approved a move of most fall sports to Feb. 15 in hopes that the East region, which all Lincoln County schools are in, will be in "Phase 2" of the metrics required to compete in most sports. Football, however, would start full practices Feb. 10 if the region is in Phase 2 by that point. In Phase 1, o...
DAVENPORT--Northeast 2B athletic directors elected today to push back the start of most fall sports to Feb. 15, a two-week delay from the previously planned Feb.1, after COVID-19 numbers in the East region failed to indicate that the region would be in "Phase 2" of Gov. Jay Inslee's state re-opening plan. Football will "hopefully" start five days earlier, on Feb. 10, Reardan co-athletic director Eric Nikkola said, as 10 football practices must occur before games can begin. Other league fall sports are cross country,...
REARDAN – Another option for female student-athletes hoping to compete in sports is coming to the school district. The school board approved the launch of a girl’s soccer team at its Jan. 14 board workshop meeting with little hesitation. Superintendent Eric Sobotta said the district hopes the team can launch by Feb. 1, or by the date fall sports are officially a go. Girl’s soccer will be added after a year-plus long process the district went through to add another girl’s sport in order to come to Title IX compliance. The pro...
DAVENPORT – Many high school sports leagues around the state are making their own decisions about how to proceed with fall sports, which the WIAA had tentatively planned for Feb. 1. The Northeast 2B League decided to aim to start all fall sports that day after an league-wide athletic director’s meeting Jan. 15, with the possibility of another delay coming. Reardan co-athletic director Eric Nikkola, who took part in the meeting, said that a final decision on whether to start Feb. 1 will come Jan. 25. If COVID-19 case num...

All-time greatness surrounds the quarterbacks in one game this weekend, while young superstars man the position in the second. I speak, of course, of the NFC Championship game between Aaron Rodgers' Green Bay Packers and Tom Brady's Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the AFC Championship game between Patrick Mahomes' Kansas City Chiefs and Josh Allen's Buffalo Bills. Rodgers and Brady, two of the most recognizable football names in the last 20 years, square off at frigid Lambeau Field f...

Calling four verticals against a two-deep safety look when the opposing defense has a strong pass rush tends to be a terrible play call. Unfortunately for those thousands in the state who root for the Seattle Seahawks, that sentiment didn't appear to affect Pete Carroll, Brian Schottenheimer, Russell Wilson and the rest of the offensive personnel on Saturday. It contributed to the Seahawks' season ending early with a Wild Card round loss at home to the rival Los Angeles Rams...

PORTLAND-Two wins may not seem like much, but the Eastern Washington women's basketball team's pair of victories at Portland Stat Dec. 31 and Jan. 2 to open Big Sky Conference road play will surely be a confidence booster for a young team with just one senior that only managed three conference wins all last season. EWU won 73-71 in the first game and 73-67 in the second game. Eastern improved to 2-2 in conference and 3-6 overall with the two victories, and in both games were...

Some won awards. Some tied school records. Many won their contests. It was a successful week for area sports teams and many individual athletes...especially for those playing hoops in Spokane and Pullman. Oh, and the Seahawks clinched the NFC West thanks to an outstanding defensive effort against the Sean McVay-coached Rams, which had historically been a thorn in Pete Carroll's side. The game included an interception thrown by Rams quarterback Jared Goff that was such a bad...

The past week saw COVID-19 cancellations and a bevy of defeats for area teams like Washington State, Eastern Washington and Gonzaga. Here's a run-down of the past week's events for area teams, including games from Dec. 2-8. WSU football The Cougars returned to the gridiron for the first time in 22 days at a fan-less Coliseum in Los Angeles to take on USC Sunday. The COVID-caused Coug rust showed, as USC built a five-touchdown lead over Wazzu in the first half and held on for a...

REARDAN--71 school superintendents, principals and athletic directors across Eastern Washington, including 20 from Lincoln County, have signed onto a letter to Gov. Jay Inslee, the Washington State Department of Health and the...

PULLMAN – Had he touched the ball yet all game? WSU 7'1" center Volodymyr Markovetskyy, who went in during the second half - hand-raised, arm out - got no reply until Noah Williams fed him in the final minute for an emphatic dunk, giving the Cougars a game-breaking lead over Eastern Washington on a night WSU trailed for most of it, winning 71-68. Markovetskyy's score came just before EWU's Jacob Davison hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one and Eastern got the ball back to w...

Ever since I was lucky enough to become the Executive Director at the WIAA, I've told our staff and membership that we are in the memory-making business. Those memories can be made in any town, large or small, in any sport or activity, at a mid-week practice, a senior night, or a State Championship final. As a former coach and teacher, I had the opportunity to be a part of those memories and I've seen firsthand that high school is defined as much by what you learn outside of...

The sports scheduled for that season include cross country, football, golf (alternate), slowpitch softball, girls and 1B/2B boys soccer, tennis (alternate) and volleyball. The change comes after Gov. PULLMAN – The Eastern Washington women's basketball team (1-6) hung tough with a Washington State squad that nearly upset No. 8 Oregon a day prior for a quarter, but sharp shooting from WSU and turnovers from EWU allowed the Cougars to pull away in the final three frames for a 73-52 Wazzu win Dec. 22. Former Liberty High School standout freshman Maisie Burnham, whose hometown of Spangle is located roughly halfway between Cheney and Pullman, scored a career-high 16 points a...

CHENEY – If Eastern Washington University manages to fulfill all Eagle fans' ultimate dream and win two national championships in the same calendar year, it will have played over 20 games in the year 2021. EWU unveiled its 11-game regular season fall 2021 schedule, as the Big Sky Conference prepares for a hopeful spring schedule that would begin in late February. Notably, EWU won't have a chance at the rival Montana Grizzlies next fall, but will host conference foes Portland S...
