Peering into the Past: Zoar Cemetery

The Zoar Cemetery series continues this week with more information on the Scheller family name.

Mollie (Scheller Derr

"Derr, Mollie. Died: 9-01-1969. Birth: 3-08-1892, Russia. Widowed. Father: Heinrich Scheller. Mother: Anna Schafer. Buried: Odessa Cemetery, Odessa, Wash." (Lincoln Cty. Health death card ) "Funeral services for Mrs. Mollie Derr, 77, were held at the UCC of Odessa on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. B. M. Schafer officiating. Interment was in the Odessa Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons: Richard Derr, James Suchland, Jack Suchland, and nephews: Ivan Walter, Leon Walter and Walter Scheller. Musical numbers were rendered by Mrs. Frances Weishaar and Mrs. Ruth Suchland, accompanied by Mrs. Dolores Cook. Mollie Derr, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Heinrich Scheller, was born on March 8, 1892 in Russia. In 1889 she came to Old Mexico with her family. Later, they moved to Oklahoma, then to Washington where in 1904 they homesteaded near Warden. In 1906 they moved to the Odessa area. She was baptized and confirmed in the Congregational tradition in her youth and was married to Jacob Derr at Ritzville on Nov. 4, 1913. They made their home on a farm south of Odessa until 1947, when they built a home in Odessa and retired. Her husband preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 1956, also one son in 1946. She was an active member of the United Congregational Church and the Ladies Aid Society for many years. Mrs. Derr maintained her home until July of this year when her health failed and she entered the nursing home. She passed away on Sept. 1, 1969. Survivors include two sons, Floyd and Harold; one daughter, Mrs. Harold (Alice) Suchland, all of Odessa; 5 grandchildren and one great grandchild; two brothers, Henry Scheller of Odessa and George Scheller of Ritzville." "Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon from the United Congregational Church for Jacob Derr, 66, who died Saturday morning at his home here. The rev E. G. Klein officiated, with burial in the Odessa Cemetery, under the direction of the Strate Funeral Home. Musical numbers were brought by the church quartet, including Mr. and Mrs. Henry Walter. Mrs. Henry Hopp and Harold Hoefel. Pallbearers were Henry P. Wacker, John Hopp, Robert Hoefel, H.B. Schafer, Albert Kirstein and E.M. Hemmerling. Mr. Derr was a lifetime resident of Washington. He was born in Walla Walla on July 18, 1888. In the year 1913, he was married at Ritzville to Mollie Scheller. They farmed in the area south of here until nine years ago, at which time they built a home in Odessa and retired. Survivors include his wife, Mollie, at the home; two sons, Floyd and Harold Derr, Odessa, and Rueben Derr, Ritzville; one sister, Mrs. Mary Thiel, Ritzville." (Odessa Record: 3-01-1956)

George Scheller:

"License Date: Nov. 29, 1922. Groom: George Scheller, age 24, first marriage, born Russia; residence: Walla Walla. Father: Henry Scheller. Mother: Anne Schaefer. Bride: Rosie Ferderer, age 18, first marriage, born North Dakota; residence: Odessa, Washington. Father: Franz Ferderer. Mother: Margaretha Kloz. Marriage: Nov. 29, 1922, Ritzville. Officiant: Rev. Franz Egerland. Witnesses: Francis Ferderer and Jacob Derr." (Adams County Auditor: Marriage Return: #392) "George Scheller, 97, died on Tuesday, March 12, 1996, at a health care facility in the Spokane Valley. Mr. Scheller was born Sept. 2, 1898, in Russia and came to the United States with his parents as a small child. He farmed for many years between Odessa and Ritzville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose, in August 1982. He is survived by a daughter, Violet Rushmeier, of Tacoma; a son, Irwin Scheller, of Spokane, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were held March 16 at the Philadelphia Congregational Church in Ritzville." (Odessa Record: March 1996)
