REARDAN – Jamie Mikelson, the current elementary principal in Oroville, Washington, will be heading to Reardan Elementary school to take the same position next year. She was the chosen candidate amongst 16 applicants and three finalists, and her hiring was accepted by the school board at the board's March 31 meeting.

Mikelson is a native of Lincoln County and graduated from Davenport High School before getting her bachelor's degree at Carroll College in Montana and her master's degree from Washington State.

She then embarked on an educational career that has spanned 20 years, starting with a sixth-grade teaching position in the Lakeland, Idaho School District. She then moved on to teach third grade and be an instructional coach in the Central Valley School District in Spokane before her first principal's job in Oroville, where she has been for the last five years.

"I have an enthusiasm for education," Mikelson said. "I love teaching and spending time with kids."

Mikelson decided to apply for the open Reardan position in hopes of moving closer to family in Spokane and maintaining a job in a community with small-town values.

"I love the camaraderie that comes through the Bi-County area," Mikelson said. "Reardan has that and seemed like it would be a good fit."

She was chosen from a finalist pool that included Harrington Elementary principal Tiffany Clouse and Reardan director of special services JoLynn Ray.

"Jamie was chosen by our interview panels for the principal position through a rigorous screening and interview process," superintendent Eric Sobotta said. "JoLynn Ray, who was also a finalist, was elevated to our Director of Learning next year and will partner with the principals and I on a number of initiatives to increase student achievement district-wide."

Mikelson will replace Dwight Cooper, who is retiring at the end of the school year after 25 years with the district.

"Dwight's done a great job and built a bit of an empire," Mikelson said. "It'll be tough shoes to fill...but I look forward to bringing a new perspective."
