City currently has two city clerks

HARRINGTON – The city presently has two city clerks. The newly hired permanent city clerk is Jere Lee, who has been training under temporary clerk, Cynthia Silhan. The two are working together with the state auditor's representative on the audit following the deadline for the city's annual report.

The plan is for each of the clerks to have training on the BIAS system. The clerks and Mayor Nathan Luck agreed that the most recent office design changes by former clerk Janice Cepeda needed to be altered to a facsimile of the appearance the office held for many decades, citizen and employee friendly.

Harrington Opera House meeting

The regular meeting of the Harrington Opera House Society on June 7, 2021 was called to order by Vice President Mark Stedman. Present were Sheryl Stedman, Ed and Bunny Haugan, Gordon and Billie Herron, Karen Robertson, Linda Wagner, Becky Moeller and one guest, Heather Slack. The treasurer's report showed an ending checking balance of $33,000. The investment account at the close of the market on May 31 showed a total of $21,429.

A question was asked regarding the amount of stimulus money the Society had received and the answer will be brought to a future meeting. Volunteers noted that 225 newsletters were mailed or delivered and brought a very successful response.

Ray Harrington has completed the basement stair project located behind the rummage room. The separate jobs of wiring and plumbing are not yet complete. Harrington donated his labor for the stair project. A discussion by those present led to a motion to present Ray Harrington with a $1,000 gift for a job well done.

The stairs need to be enclosed with wallboard, and he has agreed to accept this project. Harrington has also agreed to cut the plywood for the pew project. The foam will be cut the morning of June 11, and a date to cover the foam and plywood with fabric will be set after the pieces are ready.

Many items were discussed with no action taken, including the monthly charge from Centurytel for the dedicated phone line required in the elevator, background music for the quilt show and "bucket-list" projects for this season. The next meeting will be July 12 at 7 p.m. in the lobby.

The Vintage Shoppe

The Harrington Opera House rummage fundraiser has added a boutique-like shop in the Art Room on Willis Street. Shoppers will find beautifully arranged vintage treasures. Some items are marked with a suggested donation.

The Vintage Shoppe will formally open Friday, June 25, at 9 a.m., simultaneously with the original fundraiser rummage sale. Both will close at 3 p.m.

Additional items will be added to both the Vintage Shoppe and rummage sale for the Saturday event, coordinated with the Chamber's Harrington Vintage Country Fair. The Harrington Opera House Society will host a quilt show on Saturday and provide tours of the building.
