Defense sets up 41-0 win on the road
ASOTIN — Reardan’s defense and special teams repeatedly gave its offense good field position Friday, Sept. 4, and the Screaming Eagles took advantage in a 41-0 season-opening win over Asotin.
Reardan scored twice in the first quarter, carried a 27-0 lead into halftime and added two touchdowns in the third.
“Our defense and special teams set us up with a short field all night,” Reardan coach Matt Clouse said. “It was a great start to the season for us.”
Reardan’s offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage throughout the game. Nathan Allan, Griffin Stolp, Logan Valdez, Carter Ray, Ty Lyle, Tyler Winn, Dom Mischel and David Mendoza helped clear the way for 342 rushing yards on 39 carries. The Screaming Eagles averaged 8.8 yards per carry and did not punt.
Treyson Singleton scored on runs of 8 and 9 yards in the first quarter. He finished with 87 yards on 12 carries.
Sophomore quarterback Lakota Eldred threw two touchdown passes, connecting with Gavin Wynecoop for an 8-yard score in the second quarter and Singleton on a 31-yard screen pass in the third. Eldred completed 3 of 8 passes for 54 yards.
Parker Gralapp added a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Justin Edwards closed the scoring with a 7-yard run in the third.
Reardan’s starting backfield of Singleton, HK Bird and Elijah Legault combined for 232 rushing yards despite playing less than three quarters. Bird led the Screaming Eagles with 101 yards on eight carries, while Legault gained 44 yards on four attempts.
The defense held Asotin to five first downs and 57 rushing yards. Asotin found little room on the ground, and Valdez and Singleton pressured the quarterback when the Panthers attempted to pass.
Freshman Greg Abrahamson made an impressive varsity debut with two interceptions and 5 1/2 tackles.
The Screaming Eagles lost three fumbles and committed four penalties for 35 yards.
“It was a great win, but we need to clean some things up,” Clouse said.
Reardan’s next game is Friday, Sept. 11, at home against Kettle Falls.
