Lincoln County Commissioner Mark Stedman submitted a proposal to the Odessa Town Council at their last meeting on April 11 that would increase the sales tax collected within Lincoln County by 3/10 of one percent. The rate, which is currently 7.7 percent, would rise to 8.0 percent. The taxes collected now go four different entities. The state of Washington get 6.5 percent, local jurisdictions get 1.0 percent, criminal justice gets 0.1 percent and emergency communications get 0.1 percent. Beginning in 2010, as part of the goal to provide health education for our community, the Odessa Healthcare Foundation began sponsoring a class called Babysitting Basics for youth ages 10-18 interested in improving their skills as a babysitter. Due to scheduling conflicts, no class was able to be offered last year. Hoping to avoid similar conflicts this year, a date during spring break was chosen. Missionaries Sunday, March 6, the Harrington Church of the Nazarene hosted missionaries, Larry and Susan Weil, who have been on furlough from Mozambique nearly a year. They presented a slide show of their mission work and both spoke during the presentation. They have been in the mission field for about 18 years, since One Mission Society began work there in 1996, and have been instrumental in building a school complex there. Stephen J. Ratkowski passed away February 4, 2016 in Ritzville. His home was in Odessa. Stephen was born December 26, 1931 in Lyndhurst, N.J. In September 1952, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict before being honorably discharged as a corporal in August of 1954. The February 9 special election held in Lincoln County saw the school and hospital levies in Odessa and Harrington pass by comfortable margins. Of the 5,823 registered voters in 40 precincts, 3,107 had returned ballots by February 12 when the last count was tabulated for a voter turnout of 53.36 percent.
