To the Editor: I was a cheerleader all throughout high school here in Odessa. When I was a freshman, we cheerleaders were allowed to ride the bus with the football players to all the out-of-town games. Over the years since my freshman year of high school in 2013, the girls of the Odessa cheer team have been unable to ride the bus due to excuses from football coaches, players and the school. After learning that this is still going on and that the 2017-2018 cheerleaders cannot ride the bus to attend out-of-town games, I thought...

The 47th Odessa Deutschesfest appears to have drawn a good crowd. No final figures have as yet been submitted to The Record, but our view from being at various venues was that lots of people came and all appeared to be having a good time. The book sale that benefits the Odessa Public Library made its largest profit ever. Nate Lathrop of Rolling Thunder Pizza and sponsor of Saturday's all-ages dance and Sunday's motorcycle show called it "the best Fest ever!" A description of...

Saturday, September 16, was a beautiful day with the sun shining, a slight breeze in the air which made for a nearly perfect temperature all day. It was the kind of day that Pastor Tim would have loved, and you could feel his smile and hear his one-of-a-kind chuckle with every new act. Hosted by Tammy Carlson Tokas and with both adult and youth divisions, she allowed sign-ups until the very last possible minute. Nate Lathrop, 51, opened the show with an interesting array of...

Another Deutschesfest is in the books. We have had a little rain to wash off the summer dust and smoke from wildfires. Gardens are beginning to wind down, but you may still have a few summer squash sitting and tomatoes ripening. Gwen Clavel shared the recipe for Chocolate Zucchini Cake that she brought to a recent quilting meeting. She found the recipe at www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes website. This ultra-moist, super-rich chocolate cake may even fool the zucchini haters into...
Football In its first game of the season on September 1, the Odessa Tigers football team traveled to Inchelium where they defeated the home team by a score of 80-6. No stats were available for this game. The game against Garfield-Palouse, scheduled for September 8 was cancelled due to the smokey conditions from the many wildfires in the Northwest. The game will not be rescheduled. Tigers vs. Tekoa-Rosalia The Sausage Bowl, played in Odessa during the Deutschesfest was another lopsided victory for the Tigers over...

1 Years Ago The Odessa Record September 14, 1917 Miss Bessie Schibel hit by auto. Her parents were among the early families of immigrants, Germans from Russia. Only 14 when her mother died during the Great Depression, Rosie worked part time after school at Derr's...
Last week The Odessa Record included a Deutschesfest insert. In the insert on page 3 is a stock recipe for Apple Strudel. Please Do Not use that recipe. Reason one, amounts in metric or US are incorrect. At best, you will end up with goop suitable for hanging wallpaper. Reason two, this is not the style of strudel served during Fest, as it is a rolled rather than stretched dough. The filling ingredients listed are typical of an Austrian style strudel. Most Germans from Russia Odessa area settlers made strudel with a...

Welcome to Odessa and the Odessa Deutschesfest. This is our town’s moment to shine and to show our hospitality to the many guests who visit us. The festival began in 1971 and is now celebrating its 47th year. New generations take over the tasks associated with it from their parents and grandparents. This year especially, a cadre of younger residents and former residents have joined forces to give the festival some updates and new life. So what’s new this year, some of you are likely to ask. One of the biggest changes will occ...

In last week's Deutschesfest supplement to The Record, we spelled the name of Biergarten chair Tami Smith incorrectly. She is also serving this year for the third time, not the second, and her co-chair (not vice chair) in Lindsy Starkel. Also problematical in the supplement, Laura Estes reports in her Welcome to My Kitchen column (see page 3), is the apple strudel recipe we ran. She graciously sent us the recipe used by the Odessa Christ Lutheran Church for those of our readers who might like to try making it at...

A hot, smoky day became even hotter and smokier on Monday as several buildings at a farmstead south of Odessa went up in flames. When firefighters arrived at the scene, the buildings were already fully engulfed, including a small unoccupied house. A newer, double-wide mobile home was also located on the same property, home to Dorothy Frederick of Odessa, but it was not affected by the fire. It stood about 150 feet from the buildings that burned, and firefighters were able to...
The town council met August 28 in the public library. Council members were hesitant to grant the request for free use of the facility due to the maintenance costs faced by the town for its buildings....
