Alfred Wiest passed from this life peacefully into the presence of his Savior at the age of 96 on Wednesday morning, February 3, following a short illness. He was born May 15, 1919 in Kurudschika, Bessarabia (Romania), the eldest of six children born to Michael and Mary (Grams) Wiest. The National FFA Organization has awarded the Odessa FFA chapter $2,500 as part of the FFA: Food For All program. The nationwide program provides grant money to local FFA chapters to support year-long, service-learning projects that address local hunger needs. Ivan J. Groh passed away at the age of 62 on February 6, 2016, after struggling through a long illness that spanned seven years. Ivan was a hard-working man, farming with local-area farmers and then moving on to Spokane to start a family and pursue different careers. He worked at Scafco Construction and then launched his own janitorial business, which he enjoyed for many years. I am writing to tell you why I am no longer working in Odessa. I have developed a serious, but not fatal, medical condition that prevents me from working long shifts, which are required in Odessa. A committee of approximately 15 Odessa former athletes, coaches and supporters has held seven meetings since March of 2015, endeavoring to compile a list of candidates for an Odessa Athletic Hall of Fame. The Odessa Community Closet started in January 2014 as a ministry of Zion-Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The goal of the Closet was to help provide gently used clothing and shoes, free of charge, to people in Odessa and the surrounding community. Members of the Odessa community donate clothing, which volunteers sort and organize. Last week the Titan junior high basketball team traveled to Creston to take on the Wilbur/Creston Wildcats. The varsity created several turnovers on defense which lead to a 64-14 victory. The junior-varsity team played a hard-fought battle, coming up four points short with a final score of 20-24. Last week Thursday, the team traveled to Reardan to take on the Indians.
