The Odessa Friends of the Library completed seven weeks of the summer reading program "Dig into Reading" at the Odessa Public Library. Each week featured a different subject, such as: big equipment that digs. Jim Williams, from the town maintenance crew, brought a front loader to show the group. Phillip Klein and Servi Dei Farms of Columbia County have been fined $10,000 by the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) for burning wheat stubble without an approved agricultural burning permit. Klein, owner and operator of Servi Dei Farms, burned a field of about 300 acres of wheat stubble before the required agricultural field burn permit had been issued in 2012. On Saturday afternoon, the Harrington community was offered a free ice-cream social from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., hosted by Allen Barth at his Studebaker Garage, which he purchased in 2011. Nancy and Robert Andes of Snohomish visited Lincoln County July 18 to learn about Nancy's ancestors, the Finch family from Lamona. With a few directions form Lamona resident Becky Walter, they made their way to the Lamona Cemetary, called Fairview in some of the early-day records. The graves of Cyrus, August, Mildred, May, and Ruben Finch were located in the northeast portion of the cemetary; Ruben was Nancy's great grandfather. Harrington author, David Michaelson has recieved word that his book for young readers, "Butterfly Dust", written under the pen name Nubby Grumpins, has made the Summer Recommended Reading List of the Military Writer's Society of America. At Tuesday noon’s meeting of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, community kitchen chairperson Lindsy Starkel reported that Phase 1 of the project is on schedule to be completed by the first week in August. The highlight of the Independence Day holiday in Odessa was the firemen’s barbecue held at Reiman Park last Thursday. Odessa’s rural and town volunteer firefighters and their families provided a feast that fed approximately 200 people, most of whom stayed around to visit and relax after the lunch.
