  • Wildland, vegetation fires caused by fireworks in 2013

    State Fire Marshal Chuck Duffy has announced that in 2013 there were 102 fires caused by fireworks. Wildland and vegetation fires accounted for 66, or 65% of all fireworks-caused fires, resulting in $12,130 dollars in loss and damages. Summer weather conditions can make vegetation extremely dry and susceptible to fire.     The Harrington Opera House Society Rummage Room held its function on Tuesday, June 17, during the 11-4 p.m hours of the library's book sale. Considering it was on a weekday, there was a better than anticipated donation of about $160. Rain did not deter the treasure seekers. All funds donated are held for the eventual purchase of an elevator. The rummage events are planned to discontinue for the summer.     Odessa principal Ken Schutz and Harrington principal Jacob Bang have both accepted positions elsewhere for the coming academic year. Bang, whose wife has relatives in Ephrata, has accepted the 6-12 principal’s job at Soap Lake. Schutz will be heading to Ferris High School in Spokane.     Scotty Bacon has announced her engagement to Bryan Lanning of Kennewick. The wedding date is set for July 24 at 2 p.m. in Richland. It will be small and intimate.     Over the past nine years the Odessa Friends of the Pool have been working hard to support the Odessa Aquatic Recreation Center. The FOP was founded in 2005 by concerned moms who were willing to work with the town to keep the pools open through a budget crunch.
