  • SB 5735 would assume kids under 14 incapable of committing crimes

Emma Scher, WNPA Olympia News Bureau|Updated Feb 18, 2019

    • More than 3,000 12- to 14-year-olds were charged with crimes in Washington state over the last six years • Bill would presume this age group incapable of committing crime in an effort to keep more juveniles out of detention • Prosecutors worry this would create too many additional procedures and clog courts Over the last six years, more than 3,000 children between 12 and 14 years old were charged with crimes in Washington’s juvenile courts. Senate Bill 5735 aims to reduce that number by raising the age that a child is pres...

  • Lawmakers seek solution to state's homeless crisis

Madeline Coats, WNPA Olympia News Bureau|Updated Feb 18, 2019

    • Bill would allow homeless people to survive in public without fear of obstruction • Law prohibits discrimination based on housing status A group of 11 Democratic lawmakers aims to address the rights of homeless people and their ability to survive in public. Rep. Mia Gregerson, D-Seatac, is the primary sponsor of House Bill 1591. The representative said she seeks to create a more-permanent solution to the homeless crisis instead of quick-fix laws. HB 1591 would allow homeless people to survive in a vehicle or public spa...

  • Fewer feral cats means better quail watching

    Updated Feb 15, 2019

To the Editor: Since Odessa city ordinances were passed to eliminate feral cats in 2016, the local quail population has increased. In talking with friends and neighbors around town, it seems most of us are charmed by watching the quail run through our yards. When a light snow has covered the sidewalks, the myriad of quail footprints running in wild circles and patterns will bring a smile of delight to the observer. For those who want to attract quail to their properties to help the survival rates of these delightful fowl,... Full story

  • Health care concerns prompt letter writer

    Updated Nov 1, 2018

To the Editor: At least 75 percent of Americans believe that health care is the #1 issue in this election. Republicans in the House of Representatives have voted at least 50 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act (also called Obamacare). Republicans recently filed a lawsuit in Texas to have pre-existing conditions removed from the ACA. The Trump administration plans to implement a new policy after the midterm elections to let health insurance companies charge higher premiums for those with pre-existing conditions. Yet, many... Full story

  • Rolling Thunder Pizza, art, events, music, advertising for Odessa

    Updated Nov 1, 2018

To the Editor: – Use it or lose it – – Probably not – – We’re in for the long haul – You may have noticed that the last two weeks the Rolling Thunder Pizza shop has been closed. If you did not notice, well, I don’t know what to say. That is part of the problem, if there is one. Perhaps there is not. You can tell me. No, the Rolling Thunder is not closing or for sale anytime soon. I sometimes wonder why, though, always replaced by, “because I love Odessa. I do.” We started investing in Odessa back in 2007 and have never stop... Full story

  • Can we afford to send Lisa Brown to Congress?

    Updated Oct 29, 2018

To the Editor: Lisa Brown is your typical left-wing politician out trying to buy votes with our money by promising to vote against cuts in Medicare and Social Security benefits. As an economist she knows, but fails to mention, these programs are unsustainable without sizable infusions of tax dollars, benefit reductions, or both. These programs now account for nearly $2 trillion or half of the $4.1 trillion federal budget. Medicaid spending alone has skyrocketed since 2010 when ObamaCare passed, going from $273 billion to $383... Full story

  • Mass murderers on the loose here

    Updated Oct 29, 2018

To the Editor: It looks like we have created a generation of mass murderers. The kind we read about and grew up with! Serial killers like Ted Bundy, Son of Sam, The Green River Killer etc. But now they’re so much younger! Most are 14-22 years of age. Florida’s shooter was only 19! I am sure that we will find out he was a result of bullying! Most have been or are bullied, made fun of or ridiculed for being, shall we say, different. But that’s what makes America, America! Today, they just kill them all at once! It’s faster... Full story

  • Writer finds untruths in ads for McMorris Rodgers

    Updated Oct 29, 2018

To the Editor: It must be working for Rep. McMorris Rodgers to make ads approved by her that are untrue. I just received a solicitation by mail on September 14, 2018 that doubles down on the lie that her opponent wanted to allow sex offenders to live near public schools. Lisa Brown wanted more children protected from sex offenders, not less. (Lisa has a history of voting to protect women and children, unlike CMR who has voted against Equal Pay for Women and at least once against the Violence Against Women Act.) A full-page... Full story
