    DAVENPORT—The long-awaited and somewhat controversial Family Dollar store that’s been in the works here since Fall 2020 has finally broken ground. Construction crews began turning up ground at the former Lyons Park site Monday, Feb. 7. Property owner Brian Anderson said the Family Dollar, a retail chain store similar to the Dollar Tree, is expected to be open for business late this summer.   • Harrington school levy passes comfortably

    A two-year replacement levy seeking funds from taxpayers in the Harrington School District had passed by a wide margin as of press time. A special election was held Tuesday, Feb. 8 for voters to decide on the levy, which had received 131 “yes” votes and 57 “no” votes with just 14 ballots left to count by press time. The district will collect funds in 2023 and 2024 totaling $375,000 per year, which carries an estimated rate of $2.25 per $1,000 in assessed property value.     DAVENPORT – A Yakima truck driver accused of running a red Jeep off Highway 2 a few miles east of Davenport in May 2021 has a hearing to change his plea on a charge of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon. Ernest Vern Windisch, age 62, has an appearance scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 15 after originally entering a not-guilty plea Oct. 5, 2021.     Early one very cold morning, a knock at the door revealed a couple who were enroute to Canada. The lady was holding a small, quivering, bleeding puppy they found on the Waukon Road who needed medical attention. Seeing a coyote in the area, the couple decided to find help, for which my family was only too happy to do.
