  • Obama administration turns to the private sector

    Don C Brunell

President Obama and the newly appointed Congressional federal debt reduction committee will need to look under every rock to find ways to save money and do things differently. Now, they're getting some help from the private sector. In June, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services awarded a four-year $77 million contract to Northrop Grumman to develop a detection system capable of stopping fraud before it happens. Based on systems used in the private sector to...

  • Advice from a small town girl

    Lise Ott

I know it’s hard to believe, but I don’t have much to say this week. Maybe six months of venting is enough. Even though I’ve strayed from my original topic (does anyone remember what it was?), I haven’t forgotten it. The clock is ticking down and I’m not a whole lot closer to my goal of being healthier by my 60th birthday. I have managed to lose 20 pounds since the middle of May, when I first began commuting to Weight Watchers meetings in Moses Lake. I haven’t been as dil...

  • Baggy Britches

    Patti Jarschke

We’ve all seen it – the low slung trousers revealing underwear, a style that has become fashionable for young people to wear. Until now, it has simply been a matter to shake our heads over, but there are politicians and law enforcement officials who are ready to take a stand. Kathy McManus of the Responsibility Project reported that “as a nation that pulls itself up by its bootstraps, we are also a nation that needs to pull up its pants.” McManus reports that “the style of...

  • Letter to the Editor: O-Record's history corrected by son of its former owner

Your online history of The Odessa Record states that Ted Anderson converted the paper from letterpress to offset printing. This is incorrect, since Walt Larson owned and operated the paper using the old printing press and linotype equipment. It was under his ownership that the paper was converted to offset and printed in Moses Lake, Davenport and Ephrata. I personally ran the Linotype and the folder of the old Letterpress cylinder press. It was scrapped in Moses Lake. The Linotype and Job printing platen press were donated...

  • Countdown to Deutschesfest: Never too late to volunteer

    Lise Ott

The pace of activity in Odessa has been picking up in preparation for Deutschesfest, just one week away. The former Haagen-Daas freezer trailer has been permanently situated behind the Festplatz and is fully operational, stocked with cabbage rolls from Heritage Church. Strudels were being assembled at Christ Lutheran Church, transported to Das Kraut Haus for baking, then taken to the walk-in cooler at the Community Center for rapid cooling. From there they will travel to...

  • This Week in Odessa History

For years, the annual Deutschesfest Edition of The Odessa Record has listed the Deutschesfest Parade marshals of previous years, back to the first parade in 1971. This year in announcing Ida Schorzman as parade marshal, The Record again named the past marshals. But as always, there was a void when it came to the 1986 parade. The parade marshal that year had not been mentioned in the 1986 Deutschesfest Edition or in any other issues of The Record reporting Deustchesfest events. Nor was their any evidence in the parade committe...

  • The Creative Corner

I quite often go to funerals, I go to several every year, And bid farewell to old friends, and never shed a tear. When at a cemetary, I’m always strong and brave, While others sob profusely, while standing o’er a grave. I can watch a sad ol’ movie, with no moisture in mine eye. Others sniff and wipe their nose, and dab their wet eyes dry. And at several weddings, I’ve seen eyes quite pink and red. I always end up so amazed, that tears of joy are shed. I’ve seen when there’s reunions emotions cloud the eyes. Some cry over sp...

  • Scheller was student in nearby community

    Korianne Scheller

September 11, 2001 was a day I will never forget, but am pained to remember. I lived and went to college in Purchase, NY at the time (20 minutes north of Manhattan). Shortly before 9 a.m. my dorm was alive with the commotion of doors being pounded on alerting everyone to the attack, TV's being turned on to full volume, and gasps/cries as fellow students had the sudden realization that family members and friends could be in imminent danger. In short, it was chaos. At that moment, I made a call to my parents here in Odessa (it...

  • Letter to the Editor: For military personnel, 9/11 was life-changing event

My life changed drastically 10 years ago. Never forget 9/11. I was at work flying as a medivac nurse out of the Seattle area when my pilot woke me in the morning and told me I was going to war. I had no idea how much it would change my life. I had no idea how it would change all of our lives. As we approach the 10-year anniversary of this horrific attack, I must reflect. At the time I had a fairly normal life, working my job, raising my children, cutting fire wood, doing normal stuff. That day my life changed. I was...

  • Remember When? September 11, I Do!

Do you not remember the New York skyline, its twin towers glistening in the sun? Or does the word crater only make you think of the moon’s surface or that of a volcano; or do you remember in Septembers only the smoke from/of burning leaves, but how it leaves you in tears at the sight and sounds of an airplane overhead brings you back in dark memories of that fear of burning and falling buildings? * When you hear the sounds of the ambulance or a fire-truck that goes racing by doesn’t make you turn your head, and make you want...
