The feast of Thanksgiving is upon us, and as we gather with family and friends to give thanks and celebrate, let us not forget the Thanksgiving part. Here is a quick way to create a visual reminder of all we have to be thankful for. Take fall colored construction paper and cut into strips about 5 1/2 inches by 1 inch. Gather up some fine point marking pens and a stapler or two. Throughout the day or even the several days around Thanksgiving encourage everyone to write things...
With the proposal for a new bridge across Crab Creek on Dobson Road announced this week, it is interesting to note that the concrete bridge on First Avenue in Odessa, in recent years considered a candidate for replacement, was planned 79 years ago this week and was actually built 78 years ago in 1934. A new, reinforced concrete bridge was to be built, replacing a steel truss structure which had served since 1914. That bridge, in turn, had replaced the original wooden bridge across the creek in 1908. Before then, horses and...
Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 11/14/12: Wednesday was quiet compared to the big drops suffered in the previous few sessions, as Chicago futures lost two cents and soft white remained unchanged. Basically it’s been the negative momentum from Friday’s bearish supply-and-demand report, combined with general financial market turmoil that is doing all the damage. Expect things to remain unsettled while exports remain poor. 11/16/12: It wasn’t a very pretty end to the week as export sales...

I feel funny today. By that, I actually mean that I don’t feel funny today. I can’t think of a single entertaining thing to say. It’s possible that a serious over-commitment of time on my part has something to do with it. Can you hear my theme song playing quietly in the background yet? Oh, yes, there it is, “I’m just a girl who can’t say no . . .” Of course I can. I just don’t want to. I apparently get some kind of sick satisfaction from being overwhelmed with responsibi...

Sheriff's Report INCIDENT LOG Editor's note: Most items in this section reflect the starting point for response by local police and emergency agencies. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office does not release names of individuals who report possible criminal or suspicious activities to dispatchers or alleged victims for this column. Nov. 5: A Harrington man expressed reservations about a $360 deal involving two computers that were to be delivered to him from Sprague. He told dispatchers he had only received one and felt...

Several sites were considered for Odessa’s airport before the present location was chosen in the 1950s. Small airplanes occasionally landed in Odessa ever since the days of World War I. The field west of Odessa Cemetery was one of the landing spots. At other times., planes came down on a flat area beyond the hill south of town, in the vicinity of the present Odessa Industrial Park. None of these sites was developed. The light, single-engine planes touched down on bare earth. Plans for an airfield were being considered in Nove...

Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 11/8/12: There’s another monthly supply-and-demand report out tomorrow, and it seems like it will be hard to be anything but bearish. Wheat and corn exports have been coming in far below what we need on a weekly basis to meet the USDA’s projections as buyers seem to be sourcing from everyone but the U.S. for the time being. World wheat prices have risen during the week, which has given a boost to prices here. However, we’ll need increased demand to make...
Odessa Cub Scout Pack #784 went Scouting for Food last Saturday, driving around Odessa picking up the bags of food that residents of the town placed on their porches. The Odessa Food Bank receives the groceries and adds them to their shelves for the coming months ahead. The winter months are always the most difficult for those who are on a fixed income. Heating bills add up, gas is ever increasing and no one can prepare for the unknown ups and downs that happen in life. The Cub Scouts and their parents delivered 700 pounds...

Several requests for sugar free recipes have come in over the past two weeks. The holiday baking season is fast approaching, and folks who have recently been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes are struggling to find suitable recipes to replace traditional sweets. I have found that it is best to use recipes developed by the sugar free sweetener companies, as each product is a bit different, and none of them cook up the same as granulated beet or cane sugar. Splenda.com...
A barbed fence which had been put up across Pacific Lake in 1922 was cause for a lawsuit that went all the way to the state Supreme Court. Ninety years ago this week, the court upheld the decision that the lake was navigable and its waters were open to all. The fence had to be removed. The Odessa Record reported the case in its issue of November 10, 1922: Pacific Lake is a navigable body of water. The Supreme Court of the State of Washington has declared it so. This decision, which was recently received by attorney W.M....

Kendall Todd was responsible for eight ace serves. On...
Moving to Odessa for our retirement has not been what we expected. The people here have been wonderful. It is great to be with family again. 'But' when Dr. Powell had Tom flown out in "lifebird" on a warm and moonlit August night, I had no idea what was in store for us as a family. Stroke had not been a part of the retirement plan. The stroke was bad. As I drove back and forth every day to Spokane for 2 and a half months, I saw my husband deteriorate before my eyes. The neurologist took me to the side and said, "I don't know...

Head girls volleyball coach Ken Scherr was named the volleyball coach of year in a ceremony at the conclusion of the NE District 1B volleyball tournament in Colton last Saturday, one of the many accolades he has received in his long coaching career. Scherr had happily retired from both teaching and coaching a couple of years ago, when the new Odessa-Harrington athletic co-operative found itself unable to find a head volleyball coach. Not one to let down all those enthusiastic...

Ireland Luiten has been dancing since the age of three, with big dreams of becoming a professional dancer. That dream is coming true this December, when she will perform with the State Street Ballet Company (out of California) and the Spokane Symphony in this year’s performance of the Nutcracker Suite. Open auditions were held in Spokane in late September. Ireland auditioned with hundreds of kids vying for only a few roles. After a two-hour audition, she was cast as one of t...

Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 10/31/12: Egypt bought Romanian, French and (surprise!) Russian wheat on their overnight tender as the U.S. was skunked again. However our wheat wasn’t nearly as far out of the ballpark as it used to be. Chicago wheat futures rallied on the day but gave back half of their gains by the close. Still no pattern-breaking news. The U.S. winter wheat crop starts out its life in slightly worse condition than last year’s did, which was on the low end of his...
Veterans Day is Sunday, November 11, and on that day the members of Odessa VFW Post #7395, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the members of Odessa’s American Legion Post will serve up their annual turkey dinner/potluck. As usual, the groups will supply the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy and a hot vegetable, while salads and desserts are provided by the guests. The only thing different about this year’s event is that it will take place in the Old Town Hall rather than in what used to be called the VFW Building. The...
