  • Reporter Parkinson on to new beginnings

    Ashley Parkinson|Updated Apr 13, 2023

I am saying farewell to the Lincoln County Record-Times. I have received another opportunity for employment and felt it was in my best interest to take it. I wrote my first story almost exactly a year ago. Before starting at The Record-Times, I had been working 12-hour days and traveling for work. I was exhausted. Traveling for work seemed implausible, with gas prices jumping to $5 a gallon at that time. Walking in downtown Odessa in summer 2021, I saw an ad for a job with...

Cloudy days and rain predicted over the next week stretch out the soup season. If you had a nice bone-in ham for Easter dinner, the bone would make savory ham and bean soup. Super Bean Soup 1 meaty ham bone 1 1/2 cups mixed dried beans Water to cover beans 1 medium onion, chopped 3 cups tomato juice, diced or chopped, or 3 cups water or ham broth from a roas...

  • More allegations in Odessa

    Drew Lawson, The Record-Times|Updated Mar 30, 2023

ODESSA — After several parents and community members complained about alleged bullying and mistreatment by school district staff members and students at a March 22 board meeting, more community members came forward with further allegations. Residents James Lane and Scarlett Maddock described their experience with the school district as parents and students in an email. Lane and Maddock said their then 14-year-old daughter was threatened with gun violence at the middle school in early 2020. “During band class one day, a mal...

  • Teacher's role misrepresented in story

    Updated Mar 30, 2023

I read your article “Parents: Odessa students mistreated.” You misrepresented my role at the board meeting. Your article states, “A lone teacher spoke in support of the district,” when I specifically said, multiple times, that I was speaking as a parent, not a teacher. The article’s use of the word “lone” and the misrepresentation of my role at the meeting give my presence and support I offered less value than it deserves. While I cannot tell you which diction to choose when writing a non-biased article, I can remind you th...

  • School board meeting the catalyst

    Updated Mar 30, 2023

I attended the Odessa school board meeting on March 22. I am an alum of Odessa schools and a teacher. Professionally speaking, I cannot fathom allowing my students to be harmed. Educators’ responsibility to student safety and respect supersedes any other. At times, classroom behaviors require sternness, but never screaming, putting your hands on a student, or demeaning them. There have always been small-town problems in Odessa schools. Gossip. Bullying. Superiority. But what is happening now goes deeper. It is allowing s...

Mark Dale Kuest Dec. 9, 1963 - March 19, 2023 We were lucky enough to learn countless lessons from Mark in his nearly 60 years of life, including this pearl of wisdom: "If it hurts when you do that, don't do that" and many others. Honor your commitments. Shake it off. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. • FBLA organizes Old Town Hall

    Ashley Parkinson, The Record-Times|Updated Mar 30, 2023

ODESSA - FBLA members spent Martin Luther King Day and President's Day putting their organizational skills to work. They were tasked with sorting, boxing and shelving thousands of town records dating back to 1907. Students cleared the old library and all records are now organized by year and stored on new shelves members built. Interesting finds included handwritten courthouse records issuing fines of $1.40 for disturbing the peace. The FBLA group started this project in the...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Laura Estes|Updated Mar 30, 2023

Easter and hot cross buns seem to go together. They are often on the menu for Easter breakfast or dinner. The history of hot cross buns goes back many centuries and tradition indicates they were first made for Good Friday. Hot cross buns, as we know them today, appear to have originated with Brother Thomas Rodcliffe, a monk at St Albans, England, in 1361. The monks made them to distribute to the poor on Good Friday. Originally the cross was made on the buns with a paste of...

He most recently was an assistant coach for the girls team that made its first appearance at the Spokane Arena this year. Prior to that, he was an assistant for the boys team.
