  • OUR VIEW: Voters should reject R-90, support Espinoza

Free Press Publishing editorial board|Updated Oct 30, 2020

Olympia is clearly out of touch with Eastern Washington, and you won’t have to look any further than your ballot to figure that out. In addition to the East versus West gubernatorial battle, you’ll find Referendum 90, pitting many rural parents against a few city-based lawmakers and state Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal over the measure. Referendum 90 targets Senate Bill 5395, a so-called “comprehensive” and “inclusive” sexual education curriculum being mandated by those in Olympia. For the last few ye...

  • Time for a change in state leadership

    Roger Harnack|Updated Oct 22, 2020

If there was any doubt about a need for change in the Governor’s Mansion occupancy, political newcomer Loren Culp swept them away in the only gubernatorial debate two weeks ago. Gov. Jay Inslee, who has been occupying the mansion for the last two terms, should’ve come ready to take on a small town police chief. Instead, he ran for his typical cover — everything is the fault of President Trump, global warming, systemic racism and the coronavirus. The problem is that misma...

  • Rattlesnakes spotted around town

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Oct 19, 2020

At least three different rattlesnakes visited downtown Odessa last week. Why so many at about the same time is a mystery. It is fairly rare that the slithering critters are seen on Odessa's streets. One snake was first seen under the bench on the sidewalk outside of the Odessa Record's office. It eventually moved down the street to the west and was dispatched by Nate Lathrop when it arrived at Rolling Thunder Pizza. Another rattler showed up in the rear parking lot of the...

It’s not too illogical to believe that next year we might be running such headlines as “Gorillas to get 75,000 T.V rights at the Wilbur game.” However, gate receipts may hit by the modern miracle of television and other headlines will blare forth, “ Davenport High Says No to T.V. As Gate Receipts fall” 50 years ago Oct 15th, 197...

This was one of many issues discussed during a media call Monday, Sept. 28, hosted by Republican legislators. Sen. Judy Warnick, R-Moses Lake, expressed frustration that the governor has not called a special session to address the budget. “Not in the history of this state have we been unable to meet. Other states have met and called a special session,” she noted...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    LAURA ESTES|Updated Sep 11, 2020

This should be the week things gear up for Deutschesfest in Odessa. Sadly, like most area towns, traditional festivities have been canceled due to the corona virus. Normally, the enticing smell of apple strudel, baking in the community center kitchen would waft through the air this week. Workers setting up the Biergarten would enjoy the aroma of pickles and sauerkraut fermenting. Sausage, kraut ranza, kuchen and many other German delicacies would be tucked away in freezers...
