This past summer I found myself sitting in the middle of a dirt road/driveway leading to a friend’s farmhouse listening. Listening to nothing, but then again listening to everything. The wind in the grass, the lowing of cattle and the sound of horses hoofs as they run from one location to another. There was no noise of passing cars, cell phones, stereos, televisions or that low electrical hum that you never notice until the power goes out. I was listening to nothing. N...
To the Editor: This is what web MD says about marijuana. Also a study out of New Zealand on young adults 17-21 showed that after 40 years the teens who continued to smoke pot had an IQ of 10% less than the teenagers who did not smoke pot. Marijuana reduces your incentive to achieve and work. To me, the bad far outweighs the good. Read on what the medical journal, Web MD, has to say about marijuana. Marshall Roberts, Wenatchee [Owner and pharmacist at Odessa Drug for 37 years] From WebMD: If you’ve ever smoked a joint or e...

You have probably noticed something new and different on the front page of this week’s issue. The Odessa Record has not run ads on its front page for many years, but our history shows that it has been done in the past. When Avista approached us with two ads they wanted to run in color in the same issue but not on the same page, we ran into logistical problems. As it turned out, the simplest way to solve them was to run one of the ads on the front page. It is not something we would normally do, but Avista has agreed to our t...

Welcoming sight A normal view of the main drag (Third St.) in Harrington might show cars near the grocery store and bank, some days no available parking; and near city hall there might be four cars on the street with several in the parking lot on a busy day. Some car activity appears for Senior meals, and on rare days, cars line the street for a monthly gathering in the Memorial Hall. It is now a welcoming sight to see daily traffic stop for the offerings of the Post and...

As I am writing this column, it is one of those rainy days. I am thankful for sunny people like Lynne Wenick, who make the rainy days brighter. I had a very pleasant visit and interview with Lynne as she told me her story. She was born and raised in Twisp, Wash. to parents Lela and Garl Price. Her mother grew up in Methow and...

Fall has arrived with below freezing nights and windy afternoons. Time for warm and comforting meals. Recently I was in on a discussion about ham and beans served over cornbread, and how it is almost impossible to reproduce recipes from times gone by. Sometimes it is the people and the surroundings that made up part of the remembered flavor. So with no attempt to reproduce any recipe, just offering something good to try, I include Elsie's Bean Soup and Barb’s Corn Bread E...
