Cruizin' Harrington May 21, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., was the sixth annual Classic Car Show promoted by Allen Barth of the Studebaker Garage. Although the chicken ordinance for the city of Harrington has not been resolved, everyone associated with a successful Cruizin' Harrington was up with the roosters. Intermittent rain dampened spirits in the morning and deterred some entries, while an incident at the Studebaker Garage posed its own threat and sent the main promoter to...

Last week’s history column included a picture of local volunteers Leslie Fink and Rhonda Kuch painting. The article that should have accompanied the picture unfortunately hit the cutting room floor for lack of space. The story was from 25 years ago and had to do with the new pool that had just been built, and the volunteers were painting the interior of the dressing rooms. The entire column for 25 years ago can be read on The Odessa Record’s website, issue of May 18, 2017, at www.odessarecord.com. 100 years ago The Ode...
To the Editor: Why am I running for Mayor of Odessa? Well, first off, I think we should have pride in living here and want to make this town a better place to raise a family in. Last year, no one ran for this office. Why not? Don’t you have city pride in you? That is why I decided to run. Don’t let the council do your job. If you want a job, run for it. I am not worried about me. This town is already in good hands. I will work with the city council and employees we already have here. Why change what’s working good for us no...
To the Editor: On my bank’s website it says, “Work with a local loan officer to customize a loan for you.” Oh, I was inspired because I wanted a $2,000 piece of equipment. I love banking online, because all my information is at my fingertips. I spent a few hours printing out personal financial paperwork. However, there also can be some shocking bits of information. Example: I owe WHAT! No, I paid that and I can prove it; let’s follow the website trail. I did. During this time I was messing around I had signed up for a PayPa...

Recipes that include ingredients used in an unexpected or non-traditional way intrigue me. Maybe necessity was the mother of invention or, as is often the case now, dietary needs create new ingredient combinations. Charlene Kagele served Blueberry Squares at a recent quilters gathering. The recipe calls for a can of chickpeas (garbanzo beans) which replace some of the fat one would expect to find in crumb crust. She found the recipe on Allrecipes.com. Blueberry Squares Crust:...

I am sitting here at my dining room table looking out the window as I prepare to write this column. My thoughts go back to May 24, 2016, the day we moved to Odessa. In my first Meet your neighbors column in November 2016, I mentioned the warmth and love we felt from the wonderful people in this town and how we felt welcomed as we got out into the community. The only thing that has changed from that time until now is that things are even better. Thank you again to our Odessa...

The second item is a special chair for use in the Odessa Clinic that will allow practitioners to...
Spring has finally arrived and with it come some new developments and some new challenges for the town. We have set up a Cemetery Improvement Fund that can accept donations for the maintenance, beautification and expansion of the Odessa Cemetery. We have looked into creating a Cemetery District, but without a large endowment to fund the district, this is difficult to do. By creating a fund we can accept donations from individuals and families that want to see the cemetery maintained as a beautiful spot for our ancestors and...
