DAVENPORT - Frigid temperatures and the subsequent pressure put on pipe systems caused some issues for important groups around Lincoln County last week. Namely, burst pipes at Davenport High School and Quail Court in Odessa forced respective administrations to take emergency action. As students got out of school Thursday, Dec. 18, pipes froze in the High School fire system, boys bathroom and commons area near the tennis courts, superintendent Chad Prewitt said. Subsequently, s...

ODESSA — Hiring a second police officer to assist Police Chief Ericka Rose is one of the top priorities this year for Mayor Bill Crossley, he told The Record-Times in an annual meeting last week. Rose is currently the only officer in town. Former patrol officer Gordon Bentler departed his position last summer. Crossley is concerned that only having one officer could be contributing to a perceived increase in crime in the town. But like most small towns, finding a second office...

Winter finally got here with weather perfect to keep us indoors testing recipes in the kitchen. Organizing my pantry at the first of the year unearthed a package of Trutana, Crave Cakes Pancake Mix. I had purchased this to try the chickpea based mix some time ago, but other cooking projects took precedence. Chickpeas produce a gluten free, high protein flour, and this mix made some very light and moist pancakes. They take a bit longer to cook and the mix needs spreading in...

Monumental Dam has a concrete fish ladder. Its lock works for barge. Rather than breach the dam – or others on the Lower Snake River – how about using a tunnel-boring machine to notch an on the side an additional zig-zag fish ladder? The answer is cooperation or compromise – not contempt or hard-headed, extremism on breaching. Sen. Murray, Gov. Jay Inslee and President Joe Biden need to step back and look at the whole picture. Errol Kramer Odessa/Ritzville...

Monday featured opening-day ceremonies in the Senate and House chambers, followed by a joint legislative session in the House chamber on Tuesday for Gov. (Jay) Inslee’s final state of the state address. Because this is considered a “short session,” fewer bills will be introduced and considered than in last year’s 105-day session. The main objectives for legislators this year will be to create and pass supplemental operating, capital and transportation budgets. For me and my...

ODESSA - Free throws are free points if you make them. But the Lady Tigers made only 12 of 29 from the charity stripe, which came back to haunt them in a 52-46 loss to NE1B rival Wellpinit Friday, Jan. 5. Early in the game, the Tigers looked to senior Hayden Schuh, and she didn't disappoint. She drove the lane and crashed the boards to pick up easy points from under the basket. Schuh scored 10 first quarter points, but Wellpinit's Raya Hill's and Laria Kieffer's hot outside...

ODESSA–Defending 1B state champion Wellpinit showed why it is again one of the top teams in the state by its 83-42 thrashing of the Tigers, Friday. Jan 5. The 8-2 Redskins' only losses on the season are to 1A Lakeside and 2B Reardan. Wellpinit's superior quickness was clear from the start as it blew by Tiger defenders for easy lay-ins. Throughout the game, the Redskins outworked and out-hustled Odessa, seeming to come up with each loose ball. Corbyn Neilsen was Odessa's offens...
