Threats that morning snow showers may materialize by Thanksgiving Day have been just that; threats (so far). Snow or not, it is always a good time for soup. Vicki Strang recently shared her recipe for Gypsy Soup, a highly seasoned vegetable mixture that would easily accommodate the addition of leftover turkey and feed a dozen or so football fans on game day. Gypsy Soup 4 Tbsp olive oil 2 cups chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped celery 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 cups peeled, diced...

Through an oversight or some kind of confusion at the WIAA, her information was not forwarded to Odessa-Harrington athletic director Darin Reppe until last Friday. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that the information cited on the Seattle Times website stated that Todd...

Hi, here I am again. On the west side of Kagele road, on the west edge of the L-B-D in Lincoln Co. TS 21N, R31E, Section 36 is the Schibel farm. The attachment of the Schibel name to the farm started with Georg Peter before 1911, then Henry, Don and finally Jeff today (2010). One of Don’s sisters and her husband also farmed on the land for a period of time. Talking with Don Schibel and looking at the Schibel obituaries, I learned that in Russia about 1888, Georg Peter & K...

There were great plans 76 years ago in late November 1935, for the rabbit drive to be held in the Irby area, which was expected to draw hundreds of Spokane sportsmen. Rabbit drives had been held since Odessa’s earliest days. Rabbits were pests, and throughout the 20th Century they posed a problem because they ate crops and spread disease. The 1935 drive was set for December 8, west of Odessa, in an area bounded by Batum Road on the east, a point one mile west of Irby Road in the west and the North Central highway (now H...

Some of you may have seen the ad in last week’s paper for a community Thanksgiving dinner at Old Town Hall. That’s my cell phone number on the ad. When I lived in Portland, a little over three hours from my family in Bickleton, I frequently had to work the Friday and sometimes the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I love my family, but six and a half hours in a car in one day just isn’t my idea of anything to be thankful for. Then I discovered Thanksgiving dinner at my churc...

Sourdough waffles, there is nothing like them. For years, I had a wonderful sourdough starter that I kept going by using every couple of weeks. Due to not enough waffles, bread and biscuits being made, that starter died. When the latest Hospital Auxiliary cookbook came out I decided to try Pauline Schimke’s sourdough starter recipe. So far I have been very pleased with it. Sourdough Starter 1 package active dry yeast 1/2 cup lukewarm water 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 Tbsp salt 1 Tbsp granulated sugar 1 1/2 cups room t...
For three weeks in November 1909 Odessa fretted over an act of charity which was reported to be coming its way. The town of Palouse in Whitman County, according to Spokane newspapers, was sending a freight car loaded with fruits and vegetables for the farmers of the Odessa and Quincy areas. The people of Odessa were indignant over the circulation of a report that there was a shortage of food, The Odessa Record reported in its issue of November 12. No one seemed to have known how the story about poverty in Odessa got started....
