  • Odessa School District holds student-led conferences

    Bruce Todd

Last month the Odessa School District held student-led conferences for grades K-12. This was the first time student-led conferences have been done for all grade levels. In previous years conferences were held to talk about the students’ grades and how they were doing in their individual classes. Although the elementary has held student-led conferences in past years, this was a first for grades 6-12. Student-led conferences are part of the Navigation 101 program that the State of Washington has adopted to help students gain u...

Anyone wishing to file may do so at the Lincoln County...

  • Letter to the Editor: The fine art of volunteering

I read with great concern the letter from Karen Brooks on being ignored when wanting to volunteer. Yes, it is hard to volunteer when you don’t know the people in the community. However, do not give up. From what I am understanding, there are many volunteer jobs open for Deutschesfest. One that I have done for many years is the motorcycle poker run. I have decided to retire from that job and would be happy to explain how to do it. I will even help get you started! Some people are afraid their position will be taken by an u...

  • Letter to the Editor: Reader feels the Desert 100 is already a "big draw"

I was told years ago that there would be around 10,000 people coming for the Deutschesfest. In the six years I have been here I have never seen that. I asked Dale Ramm what was the problem with the Fest. He told me we needed a big draw (attraction). I stated, “It needs to be a family event, not a drunken bash.” Hey Odessa, open your eyes you already have a draw! It is called “The World Famous Desert 100,” where 8,000 family oriented, off-road, motorcyclists come to have fun. Candy Starr told me that if the Chamber and town pu...

  • Violate Mae (Skaggs) Frederick

Editor’s note: The Record last week erroneously ran the unrevised version of Vi Frederick’s obituary rather than the one specifically requested by the family. That version follows: Violet Mae (Skaggs) Frederick died May 15, 2011 in Odessa at the age of 72. She was born August 31, 1938 in Kettleman City, Calif. to Clifford and Edith (Hill) Skaggs and was raised in Lemoore, Calif. • This Week in Odessa History

Marketing and merchandising might be a lost art in Odessa and most other small towns today. There was a time when there was something other than a “you see what we have” attitude to selling. Merchants and service business aggressively sold to their customers. Even here in Odessa, they made shopping interesting, not a chore. The June 8, 1934, issue of The Odessa Record reported on a forthcoming trade day, to be held the following day, Saturday, June 9, which offered free gifts to shoppers, as well as bargain priced mer...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Laura Estes

Spring seems to have crept in by the back door. Chives are about to bloom, mint is poking up bright stems of fresh green leaves and rhubarb is growing lush and tall. A few sunny afternoons have brought thoughts of picnics and barbecues. Rhonda Kuch was recently in charge of a snack buffet that needed to be available for several hours in the afternoon. She solved the keeping cold things cold dilemma by filling an infant size inflatable pool with ice and nestling the dip...

  • God's Precious Half Acre

    1

God's Precious Half Acre On a knoll west of town, the angels stand guard As a few rest in peace, in a lonely graveyard Two miles west of Odessa, and south a half mile Lies this desolate cemetary, by itself - in exile Cordoned off by a fence, wire darkened with rust Along an old gravel road, whirlwinds kick up the dust Abandoned, deserted, like a young orphan child Unwanted, neglected - vegetation grows wild But - this small humble plot, with natural disguise Has a very rare...

  • Should you immunize your children?

    Patti Jarschke

As adults, most of us have childhood memories of those trips to the doctor’s office when we’d hear those words, "You'll hardly feel a thing", or "It won't taste that bad." For most of us it did hurt and yes, it did taste bad, but those vaccines that we were receiving through inoculations or tiny cups of not so tasty liquids, were just a part of life. They were what kept us from succumbing to innumerable diseases, some even contagious. And that lollipop from the doctor or a k...
