DAVENPORT-Mike and Virginia Fries remember buying Edna's Drive-In in May 1992 not knowing when they'd re-open its doors after it was closed for 18 months following Edna Jackson's passing. They decided the highest customer demand would be during Pioneer Days, so they opened July 16, 1992. That was a decision Virginia Fries remembers regretting, but now looks back at with a laugh. "We were so swamped, and we hadn't practiced how we would work together," she said. "That was the...

New Odessa homeowner Jason Shipman and his wife attended the meeting to request an adjustment to their water bill rate due to a complicated issue involving a tenant in a converted garage on their property. Following discussion in which council members mostly appeared agreeable to the rate request, the council opted to table the issue until the next meeting, while certain q...

HARRINGTON – The Harrington Golf and Country Club closed for the season Oct. 3. Asked how the season went, General Manager Melissa Gilmore said, "Awesome!" The course will reopen April 1. In the meantime, the course is available for play under the "honor system". But the Cafe and Pro Shop are closed, and no c...

Frosty nights bring on clean-up-the-garden time. Some fortunate gardeners gained an abundance of green beans after the hot summer temperatures subsided. Former Odessa resident Sherie Heimbigner asked if I had the recipe for the green bean soup served at the annual Mennonite Auction. I do not have the Mennonite recipe but I shared with her the recipe I have used. German Grun Bohne Suppe [editor’s note: or in grammatically correct modern German, “gruene Bohnensuppe”] attri...

Apples, zucchini and back to school snacks. How can we combine the bounty of early fall with the need for afterschool snacks? Granola is a favorite of many and may include dried apples and other dried fruits. I recently tried a recipe for Slow Toasted Granola made in a slow cooker. Applesauce is included in the granola coating. The recipe comes from the Better Homes and Gardens recipe site. Slow Toasted Granola 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup applesauce 1/4 cup canola oil 1/4 cup...

Sprint boat racing pits a driver and navigator against a maze of channels and the clock. At speeds reaching more than 80 mph, the driver concentrates on making turns as the navigator memorizes the cou...

EDWALL – Does it take a wheat grower to know how to represent wheat growers? It certainly doesn't hurt, which is good news for the National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) as they welcome Mariah Wollweber, a fifth-generation Washington wheat grower, as their new director of communications and partnerships. Wollweber grew up on her family's farm in Edwall, Wash., where she began helping her grandfather bale hay at age 8 and stepped up to driving a harvest truck at 13. S...

DAVENPORT – With the recent opening of Lincoln Hospital's new medical clinic, area residents are once again reminded of how fortunate they are to have top notch medical care and providers in our own backyards. Medical providers and facilities have been a mainstay of Davenport since pioneer days, and behind every good facility are those who put in many years to serve others. People like Lincoln Hospital's "Honest Abe," who has been filling shifts at the hospital since it opened...

LAMONT - A local man was named in June as a board member for the Washington Association of Wheat Growers. Dave Swannack replaced Randy Suess as Whitman County president and on the board, the association reported last week. Swannack was one of two new appointees to the board - the other is Leif Claassen of Asotin County. "It's important farmers get involved (in industry organizations) because we are going to lose everything we farm for if we don't get involved," Swannack said....

Zucchini season is here. There are many ways to use this prolific vegetable. Small, tender zucchini sautéed with a bit of onion, or added to a stir-fry, grated in breads, cookies or cakes, and some sneaky cooks puree and add to just about anything. Camouflaged with chocolate, baked into breads and pastries and mixed into sauces and soups, vitamins and fiber are added to diets with out the eater knowing the difference. Chilly nights the past few days found me searching for...
