As summer is winding down and we are headed toward fall, I notice the summer flowers slowly fading and the fall flowers starting their entry into the wonderful world of beauty. Along the pathway, I also find two beautiful people happy to share their story. Chuck and Ellen Van Hevel and their faithful companion dog named Moupher have lived in Odessa for five and a half years. Chuck has a sister who lives in Soap lake and Ellen has a sister who lives in Chewelah. In 2006, they b...

Shirley A. Johnson of Odessa recently returned from the Denver area where she attended the wedding of her son James Dean (JD) Johnson to his lovely bride Loren M. Cosseau. Friends and family of the couple joined them for the ceremony held at Stonebrook Manor in Thornton, Colo. on July 15, 2017. His brother Michael J. Johnson and Michael's two sons, Jameson and Weston Johnson, also arrived from their home in Ft. Mohave, Ariz. Unable to attend were JD's grandmother Emma Cloud...

I had a wonderful visit with an awesome lady and learned some history about this area as she told me her story. Alva Richardson was born in Odessa and remembers when, before there was a Deutschesfest, Odessa had a rodeo. She said it lasted 10 or 12 years and shut down because of lack of participation. Alva grew up on a cattle ranch between Odessa, Harrington and Ritzville. She attended school in Harrington and graduated high school in 1947. She joined 4-H in grade school and a...
Summer produce is in abundant supply, as are recipes for the column. I won’t be able to get them all into one issue but will start out with those calling for currently available produce. Carrie Greenwalt shared two of her favorite summertime recipes. Mushroom/Spinach Crustless Breakfast Quiche calls for fresh mushrooms and frozen spinach, but you may substitute canned mushrooms and fresh spinach. Zucchini is abundant now so I even made a version using thin sliced zucchini that turned out very good. Mushroom/Spinach C...

During some recent conversations, I didn’t realize how many people are still hurting deeply over the loss of Pastor Tim Hauge. I should have figured that out, knowing how deeply I’m still affected by it and struggling to deal with it, especially as we approach the first anniversary of his entrance into Heaven. But it’s not just Pastor Tim we’re grieving. There are plenty of others with whose deaths we still wrestle. It’s so easy to get caught up in our own pain that we forget...

Summer harvest season is not just for wheat. Home gardens can produce a bumper crop leaving the gardener wondering what to do with it all. I received requests for an easy apricot jam, any ideas besides zucchini bread for an abundance of zucchini and those cooking for harvesters were exchanging meal ideas on Facebook. My recommendation in that department was Twist Tuna Salad, a recipe I received from the late Elizabeth Fink in 1989. Easy to prepare, it lends itself to...
Kendall Todd, a 2013 graduate of Odessa High School, has been awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. She graduated cum laude. Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private, liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. The university, which has an enrollment of nearly 3,000 students, offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Todd is the daughter of Bruce and Kim Todd of Odessa....
The women in the “Chicks with Sticks” league continue to play some great games of golf. The side games for week #5 involved rolling a die with the amount rolled taken off the total score. Winning that game were the Golden Girls: Joyce Kuest, Myrna Wolsborn, Apryl Wraspir and Judy Scrupps. Side games for week #6 will be on hole 7, where the women must land on the green with their drive....
As I was interviewing Karen Peterson for this column, I realized that most of you probably already know her and her family. But then there are newbies like myself who do not. Karen was born in Seattle and grew up in Edmonds. She met and married Ron Peterson, and they were married 52 years. They had two children, Nicki Peterson of Lake Havasu, Ariz., and Bryce Peterson, our Odessa policeman. Ron was in the coast guard, and at one time they were stationed at the Makapuu lighthouse station in Hawaii. They lived in Ferndale for y...

The women’s golf league “Chicks with Sticks” started another season with a kick-off dinner at the Odessa Golf & RV club house June 20. If interested, there are new side games every week....

Kendall GraceAnn Todd and Zachary Michael Shuhom were married July 1, 2017 at five o'clock in the afternoon. The ceremony was officiated by Nate Emhoff in a garden setting at the historic Glover Mansion in Spokane, Wash. Dinner and dancing followed the ceremony in traditional fashion. A rehearsal dinner and party was hosted the previous evening by the parents of the groom at a beautiful waterfront home in Post Falls, Idaho. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Todd...

As I was getting ready for work Friday, June 30, I received a message from Kaylene James that said, "Today, for the last day of track and field camp, they are having a mini track meet. Thought if the paper needed to fill some space, it would be good. It goes from 9-11 a.m." She then told me it was for incoming grades 1-6. The week-long track and field camp is just one of several activities being hosted by Go! Odessa Recreation, a non-profit founded and run by James to bring...
The Board of Directors of Odessa School District #105 met in the school library at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2017. The board approved a motion to return to the Odessa Tiger mascot, with school colors of orange, white and black. As a point of interest, it was announced that Harrington had also returned to its original mascot, the Panther, with school colors of red and black, last used approximately 30 years ago. The Odessa board approved the purchase of new athletic uniforms in orange and black, with some solid black...
The annual BNB High School Basketball Camp for boys held in Soap Lake June 19 through 22 drew teams from throughout the state. Odessa High School sent nine members of the 2017-18 basketball team to the camp. The boys played against 10 different schools, winning nine games and losing one by only three points. The boys were coached at camp by Larry Moffet, who indicated that it was a wonderful time for all involved and that Odessa had a regular season, plus future seasons, to look forward to. BNB basketball camps are offered...

Several weeks ago a gentleman dropped a recipe by The Odessa Record office, but staff did not catch his name. Our policy is to not print recipes anonymously, but the recipe concept intrigued me. The recipe arrived as a list of ingredients but no amounts and minimal directions, making it difficult for many readers to know how to proceed. I do love a puzzle, so I did a little experimenting and the following, after several attempts, is my version with the list of ingredients as I...

Each year, the Washington State Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons awards somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen scholarships for outstanding students across the state. For the size of our state, not that many are awarded. This year Elizabeth Larson of Odessa High School was awarded the Grand Lodge Legacy Award in the amount of $2,000. Over the past approximately eight years, this is the third time an Odessa student has been awarded one of the few scholarships from Grand Lodge, via our local Masons in Odessa Lodge No....
My daughter, Jena Meise has been selling LuLaRoe clothing for about a year now, and what a great experience LuLaRoe has been for us. Recently, I was blessed to go along with her on a cruise to the Bahamas and Virgin Islands, a cruise she earned by selling LuLaRoe. We set sail on April 30, 2017 out of Port Canaveral, Fla. Once our room was ready we headed that direction to put our luggage inside. When we entered our room, we were welcomed with some fun LuLaRoe Swag and a very nice welcome note. On our first night of the cruise...

On Sunday, May 14, Odessa's Heritage Church honored Delores Cook as its long-time church organist. She has been playing for as long as anyone can remember. She started playing the piano at five years old and eventually added the organ to her skill set. Delores Schorzman married Delbert Cook on October 15, 1949 and became a member of the church in 1951. May 14 was a wonderful time of celebration with many family members traveling from all over to come and celebrate with her....

Recipes that include ingredients used in an unexpected or non-traditional way intrigue me. Maybe necessity was the mother of invention or, as is often the case now, dietary needs create new ingredient combinations. Charlene Kagele served Blueberry Squares at a recent quilters gathering. The recipe calls for a can of chickpeas (garbanzo beans) which replace some of the fat one would expect to find in crumb crust. She found the recipe on Allrecipes.com. Blueberry Squares Crust:...

I am sitting here at my dining room table looking out the window as I prepare to write this column. My thoughts go back to May 24, 2016, the day we moved to Odessa. In my first Meet your neighbors column in November 2016, I mentioned the warmth and love we felt from the wonderful people in this town and how we felt welcomed as we got out into the community. The only thing that has changed from that time until now is that things are even better. Thank you again to our Odessa...
