This past weekend, I was a little out of county — okay, fine, completely out of county — headed to Moses Lake to cover a wedding. My second full wedding shoot ever, and let me tell you, I’m still finding glitter, bobby pins, and soggy lens wipes in my backpack. The rain across Eastern Washington didn’t ruin anything — it somehow made the photos even dreamier. I fueled myself on what may have been too much coffee while editing over 400 photos in two days — my fastest tur...

Well, folks, I did it. I finally took a vacation day. Singular. One day. And I used it to go visit my family on the west side - my brother, sister-in-law, nephew, stepdad and mom. You know, the usual suspects. It wasn't too wild of a trip: stop in Lacey - check. Stop in Tacoma - check. Fresh seafood - check, check, check. I'm sorry, but when you've spent enough time eating "crab" that's actually just dyed perch, you develop a moral obligation to find the real thing. But this...
Pumpkins and all sorts of winter squash are currently plentiful in the markets. Many of the decorative varieties also make good pumpkin puree for fall recipes. Pumpkin and squash add vitamins and fiber to meals. Rich desserts benefit from the creamy texture. Tracy Walter share the recipe for the Pumpkin Better Than Sex Cake she made for a birthday gathering. This is a poke style cake with sweetened condensed milk added after baking. Boxed cake mix and bottled caramel sauce make this recipe easy to prepare, but do plan for sev...

WENATCHEE — Two Lincoln County journalists were recognized for their work last year in newspapers. The image captured the small dog’s “big” attitude and the big...

Odessa had two special visitors this week - Madison Wade, reporter for King 5's Unsolved Northwest, and Joseph Huerta, an Emmy Award-winning photojournalist who somehow managed to make our small-town office look cinematic. Now, I went to school to be behind the camera, not in front of one. But apparently, the universe decided it was time for me to face my greatest fear - being on television. I always figured if I were on TV, it would be for something like winning a Jet Ski...

Ahhh, October — the month when the air smells faintly of cinnamon and chaos, and the world collectively agrees that it’s finally time to start pretending our front porches are haunted. It’s my favorite month of the year and the glorious start of a new season — arguably the best season (sorry, summer). Halloween has always had my heart. Maybe it’s the spooky atmosphere, maybe it’s my lifelong love of horror movies — the classics, the campy ones, the meta ones like Scream — or maybe it’s just my inner child thriving on excus...
Frost is on the pumpkins and tomatoes throughout the Inland Northwest. Garden cleanup time is in full swing. End of season tomatoes can be turned into fresh salsa or traditional Pico de Gallo. Late ripening tomatoes tend to be dryer so the salsa is thicker. Ingredients in both versions of salsa are similar. Generally Pico de Gallo does not include sweet bell pepper, whereas fresh Salsa often includes some bell pepper. Best Fresh Tomato Salsa 3 cups finely chopped tomatoes 1 cup finely diced onion 1/2 cup finely chopped green...

Harrington Fall Fest brought the usual: food, friends, laughter, and enough pumpkin spice to put a scarecrow into a sugar coma. But this year also brought something new-your local newspaper mascot and part-time diva, Winnie the weiner dog, scored her first athletic medal. Bronze, baby. The 5K Fun Run kicked off at 9 a.m., and while I was still shaking off Deutschesfest laryngitis, Winnie was in prime form. The crowd was packed, and while I was just another runner pinning on a...

Autumn has begun. Pumpkins are ripening, and showing up at markets. Pumpkin pie, muffins, cookies and bread recipes are on area cooks minds. You can buy canned prepared pumpkin, but the fresh flavor of a sugar pie pumpkin is exceptional. Though pie pumpkins are best for texture and flavor, any pumpkin or winter squash may be used to make the solid puree required for most recipes. Preparation takes a little time but is quite easy to do, and there are many methods, from boiling to baking. The following method is my favorite...
