Sustained winds of 22 - 25 miles per hour Monday took what is now called the Apache Pass fire from about 200 acres Sunday evening to more than 18,000 as of Tuesday morning. Extremely dry conditions in the scablands contributed to the blaze. All available firefighters from the Odessa area responded to the blaze, which at its closest point to Odessa was burning Monday afternoon about 12 miles north of Odessa, just north of Eagle Springs Road. Crews from Wilbur, Creston,...

There are trim boards to be painted and installed, and the bricks which were sold to finance the project to be laid. A group of Odessa residents, including Chamber of Commerce president Marlon Schafer and Paul Hopp, are hoping to raise interest for the refurbishment and reinstallation of the historic town clock, which has graced at least two buildings in town until its retirement. The clock, which is over six feet tall from base to cap, was originally, according to Hopp, hung on the front of the Thiel Block, outside what is now Iverson Law Office. The filled-in holes from that installation...

The project, which has been done in stages over a period of approximately two years, was spearheaded by Mayor Doug Plinski, who also was the impetus behind the recent community center facelift. This project will be something of a facelift as well, as the siding has been applied only to the sides of the building that face the s...

The August 7, 2012 primary election was apparently fairly unappealing to most voters, as very few of them bothered to vote at all. Despite the very low turnout, the Lincoln County race for County Commissioner was one of the closest in the state, with only a few percentage points separating each of the three candidates. As The Record goes to press this week, Mark Stedman had a slight lead over Kim Ramm who had a slight lead over Alan Stromberger. This is one race, where...

I’ve often said the U.S. health care system is so complex that trying to understand it makes your hair hurt. Case in point: the Affordable Care Act runs more than 2,000 pages. I’ll grant you that it’s a massive piece of legislation — but lawmakers felt that’s what was needed to fix at least some of the problems that resulted from the helter-skelter way our health care system developed. This complexity also helps explain why it has been so difficult for the Obama administration to communicate how the numerous provision...

The hiring of a new science teacher for Odessa High School was approved at the July 25 meeting of the Odessa School Board. Seth Hodges comes to Odessa from St. Michael’s, a private Catholic high school on the Navajo reservation in Arizona. The school there is about the same size as Odessa’s school. Hodges is originally from Washington and his elderly mother still lives in the state, so he was looking for a way to move back “home.” The board also accepted the resignation of Darin Reppe as the athletic director for the Odessa-...
