You never know what you will find hid among the zucchini. To make a long story short, the cookie recipes that we had been waiting for were in with a packet of at least a hundred zucchini recipes, which I filed away until zucchini season. Ginger Snaps 3/4 cup shortening 1 cup brown sugar, packed 1 egg 1/4 cup black strap molasses 2 cups flour, sifted 1/4 tsp salt 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp each ground ginger, cinnamon and cloves Granulated sugar f...

An odor-causing agent is added to natural gas as a safety measure, since the gas itself is odorless and color...

  • School board to ponder senior year enhancements

District superintendent Suellen White reported that there were issues with “senioritis” this year, leading her and principal Ken Schutz to research some changes that may need to be considered to keep the seniors more engaged throughout the entire school year. Once the students get college acceptance letters around the winter holidays, some tend to think they are done working for the year. Dr. Duane Pitts is taking an institute course on advanced placement classes. If it is found to be feasible, the district will try to add...

  • What is Our Story

    Doug Plinksi, Mayor of Odessa

Every town has a story. What is Odessa’s story? The true story cannot be dictated by a town banner or a marketing campaign. Unconsciously, every person who travels through our town characterizes Odessa. Is it the tale we want told? Are we progressive or are we conservative? (I don't mean Democratic or Republican parties). Is Odessa hip and cool or is it family friendly? Are we dead or are we vibrant? Are we clean or are we dirty. Are our neighborhoods vacant or are they thriving? Is your property neat and tidy or overgrown a...

  • This Week in Odessa History

A heat wave just before the beginning of harvest 81 years ago added to wheat growers’ woes. They were already expecting to harvest the hottest crop in history-- if indeed they even harvested at all. The Record carried this account in its issue of July 18, 1930: The first real heat wave of the season caused Odessaites to swelter as the government thermometer registered an even 100 degrees as The Record went to press. The torrid weather is ripening the wheat fast, and harvest will begin within 10 days. Farmers have been busy b...

On November 5, the group will depart Spokane and fly to San Diego, rent a van and drive to Mexico. • The Creative Corner: An Old Gandy Passed Away

    Arley M Bischoff

An old gandy passed away, and as I stood solemn at his grave, I remembered how the railroad, had worked him like a---slave! I recalled how he was treated, it was oft---like he was dirt! He never missed a day of work, though his aching back would hurt. And no one really gave a damn, how much steel this gandy laid, Or the ties he hand dug in, and tamped tight with a spade. Yes---as I began to reminisce, the age of steam meandered by, Along with things this man endured, swinging pick and spiking tie. How sweat profusely dripped,...

  • Letter to the Editor: Creston biodiesel project still stirs debate

In his June 9, 2011 letter, Garry Rosman had some questions concerning the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the formally state-owned property in Creston. I would like the opportunity to address this subject. Mr. Rosman is under the false impression that the state spent $1.3 million to build what he referred to as ‘the Creston Bio Energy Plant.’ The facts are that the state never funded the biodiesel project in Creston. The building belonged to the NW Lincoln County Regional Public Development Authority (PDA) and was...

  • Letter to the Editor: Reader objects to publishing non-payers' names

Nate here. I love the Odessa Record so much that I have a scrip sent to President Obama, Gov. Gregoire, my mom, my grandpa and several others. The Record always puts in opinions regardless of the content and generally un-edited. I like that it is true and to the point. However, I have a problem with this week’s paper, and it is not the Odessa Record’s fault. They publish it; we read it. Page 2 – Lise Ott, always positive and a good read. Thank you. This week, Page 5, “Notices of infraction will be issued.” Let me start (by...

  • Letter to the Editor: Reader wants consequences imposed for bad behavior

I want to make it CLEAR that this is my OPINION and NOT a rebuttal to anything written to you in the past. It seems to me that doing the same thing over and over again, looking for a different result, is insane. I have a hard time with people in this community or any other, who are placed in a public position, no matter how large or small. They are looked up to for guidance and good decisions, some are given good pay, insurance benefits and other perks not to mention the TRUST of the townspeople in Odessa, and they rip them...

  • College tuition on the rise - can we afford it?

    Patti Jarschke

With nothing but well wishes, we congratulated and celebrated Odessa’s 12 graduating seniors last week, all but one with confirmed college plans in place. There were many scholarships announced for excellence in academics, athletics and community service. However, the full tuition and other college or university-associated costs far exceed the amounts of those hard-earned and well-deserved scholarships. Katie Schmidt, a reporter from The Olympian, tells us of another recent g...

  • This Week in Odessa History

Shipping costs have always been a major concern for Odessa area grain growers. Just before the harvest of 1911, the Great Northern Railway announced a cut in the rate to ship grain to Seattle from Odessa. The Milwaukee Road had built the spur line up Rocky Coulee from Warden to Marcellus the year before and was offering cheaper rates to the Coast to growers who shipped out of Packard, Schoonover, Lauer, Batum, Moody and Ruff stations. To be competitive, the Great Northern lowered its charges. In its issue of July 14, 1911,...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Laura Estes

School is out and the swimming pool is open. Soon young entrepreneurs will be setting up lemonade stands to earn money for swimming and other summertime activities. Personally, I try to never pass by a children's lemonade enterprise. I like to encourage budding business owners. Following are some tips for operating a successful lemonade stand. 1. Make your signs big. Use an extra wide marking pen to make lettering that can be read from half a block away so customers have time...

  • No killer bees here, just good old-time honey bees

Odessa Deputy Marshal Bryce Peterson got one of his stranger calls for service this past week. A swarm of bees landed in the roadway just outside of Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center. The bees all remained pretty much in a clump in the roadway, even as people tried to run over them to chase them away. They stayed, however, and Peterson was at a loss. After consulting with Odessa Public Works director Roger Sebesta, however, he was referred to local resident Harvey Delzer, who...
