Gifts from the kitchen lend a personal touch when shared with family and friends. Homemade and from scratch recipes make gifts and events more festive. Eggnog, a traditional holiday beverage, is a cut above when homemade. It takes some forethought, as the base must be made and chilled at least four hours before serving time, but the end result is well worth the extra planning. Holiday Eggnog 12 large eggs 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 1/2 tsp salt 2 quarts whole milk 1 cup... Full story

Hello readers. I want to introduce you to my good friend and co-worker Dyanne Deering. Some of you may already have had the privilege of knowing who she is from her irregularly appearing feature, “Diary of a mad, fat, bipolar woman.” Others may know her simply because she grew up in the Odessa area (her maiden name is Kramer). If you do not happen to know her, you should get to know her, because when I talk about the “privilege” of knowing Dyanne, I really mean it. To have he... Full story

Pumpkin, squash and winter cooking apples are plentiful in markets and stores right now. Fortunately, there is no end to the number and variety of recipes for preparing these fall fruits and vegetables. Awesome Country Apple Fritter Bread has been on my Pinterest “To Try” list for sometime. I recently made this to share at an afternoon meeting and the loaf quickly disappeared. The recipe was posted by Kim Lange, and is very easy to prepare, working well with any variety of... Full story

By Rev. Jon Hayashi Heritage Church Pray...with Thanksgiving In a sermon at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, Gary Wilburn said: In 1636, amid the darkness of the Thirty Years' War, a German pastor, Martin Rinkart, is said to have buried five thousand of his parishioners in one year, an average of fifteen a day. His parish was ravaged by war, death, and economic disaster. In the heart of that darkness, with the cries of fear outside his window, he sat down and... Full story

Early November is a good time to get a head start on holiday meal preparation. Roasting a turkey hindquarter and using the drippings to make gravy to freeze for use at Thanksgiving or Christmas, will assure ample gravy for a crowd. Seasoning the hindquarter as you would the holiday bird will insure a flavorful gravy. Shops and markets boast a vast array of seasoning mixes, rubs and salts, and usually carry a hefty price tag as well. Make your own allows you to adjusting to... Full story

Welcome to all Deutschesfest attendees reading this column. Readers share their recipes, and I do my best to test results, so all can successfully make the delicious dishes shared by Odessa cooks. All readers are invited to submit recipes. In light of Deutschesfest, our first recipe this week is Scalloped Cabbage. Kathy Ashe brought this to a recent potluck and received numerous recipe requests. She got the recipe while living in Minnesota, so the dish may have Scandinavian ro... Full story

Odessa gardens typically produce an abundance of zucchini squash, cucumbers, tomatoes and other vegetables this time of year. Hot weather is past, nights are still warm so bees increase activity, pollinating garden blooms, producing more vegetables than needed for daily meals. Slow-cooker to the rescue. Large quantities of soup and sauces may be made in a slow-cooker, then divided into freezer containers, frozen to be used later. Freezer zip-closure bags are convenient for...

After a successful career in banking, 70-year-old Jon Heimbigner has kept busy in retirement pursuing volunteer work in the areas of athletic halls of fame and engaging older athletes in the sports activities that keep them young and active. Heimbigner grew up on a wheat farm located between Odessa and Ritzville. He attended school in Ritzville until his father Jonah Heimbigner, also a long-time supporter of athletics, accepted a teaching job in the Odessa School District. Aft...

"Community--a group of people living in the same place, a feeling of fellowship with others, sharing common attitudes, interest and goals." In the town of Odessa are a variety of communities where we try to work together and help and encourage one another. That's what makes Odessa a special place to us. We are still in love with this wonderful place and all the awesome people that make this town what it is. And with that, let me introduce you to Mike and Jennifer Drury. Mike...
When is a crisp salad a beautiful, nutritious and filling main dish? When it is topped with hot meatballs, seasoned with chili, marjoram and cumin. Fresh and filling, Big Sur Supper Salad is one of my go-to favorites for summer meals. I found the recipe in an advertisement for Kretschmer Wheat Germ in 1978. The recipe calls for shaping the meatballs, then baking them, an easy less messy way to make meatballs. My favorite way to make meatballs is in the microwave. Press the meatball mixture into a glass 8 or 9 inch baking...

Quilters tend to be good cooks and bakers. Attend any quilting related event that includes a potluck meal and you will come away well sated and with a handful of new recipes. Grape nuts-Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies were among the selections at a Moses Lake event I attended in June. Though I have not tracked down the baker, I did find a so named recipe on line at www.geniuskitchen .com, that is likely the same recipe. These crunchy cookies would be a nice addition to a harvest...

Rogers & Hammerstein's musical Oklahoma! was performed last weekend at Davenport High School by the Wheatland Theatre Company with a cast composed of both local area residents and professional actors. Attending the Sunday performance, we found the set design lovely, the sound engineering perfect (you could hear every word spoken), the costumes authentic and the music toe-tapping, classic Rogers & Hammerstein, played by real musicians sitting on the stage balcony. Nathan...

Salads are a great way to keep the family fed on hot days, or, as a side dish anytime of the year. Any preparation cooking needed can be done early in the day while you can open windows for ventilation. Your slow-cooker is handy for cooking many salad ingredients. If you have a protected area outdoors, use your slow-cooker outside. Chicken breasts cook nicely over night. Mama Scheller’s Chicken Salad, a recipe developed by Kerry Scheller, has been a favorite in her family f...

I had just checked out of the school library a book of songs. I ran the seven blocks home from school to show it to Mom. "Let's sing," I said. We sat on the floor, squeezed into a little corner in the living room created by a chimney running up an inside wall. Maybe we liked the acoustics or thought if we hid, no one would hear our sorry warbling. My mom and I share a sad love. We love to sing, but we simply can't do it. It's not pretty. It can be downright ugly. But Mom and...

Summertime is ideal for teaching kids to cook. By age 9, young people can begin to master dishes involving boiling water for cooking pasta, eggs and packaged meals, measuring and mixing ingredients for cookies and muffins, and oven baking. Once they are familiar with how a range and oven works, and learn general safety precautions, they can begin mastering, blenders, mixers, food processors and other kitchen implements. Most kids start of with reheating food in a microwave...

Have you ever missed someone but never really come to the realization of it until you met up with or spoke with that person again? Usually it's someone we take for granted and assume they will always be there just because they simply always have been. It's almost always a family member. You know the old story. You get older, move away, start a life, school, career, marriage, kids. Meanwhile, the other person, be it a sibling, cousin, aunt or uncle, has done the same thing,...

Salad season, school is out and pool time; recipes in this column are mostly from Odessa Friends of the Pool Cookbooks. Barb Schlimmer’s Taco Salad is always a hit at any event she brings it to. The recipe is found in the cookbook titled “Returning to the Kitchen with Friends of the Pool”. Make the bulk of the salad the night before and have the lettuce and chips prepped for easy finishing the next day. Taco Salad 1 pound hamburger 1 head lettuce 2 tomatoes 4 green onions 1 av...

I have found over the last two years living here in Odessa and doing interviews, that there are some very wonderful and interesting people.
