Drew Lawson is the editor of the Lincoln County Record-Times. The opinions expressed in this column don’t necessarily reflect those of the Record-Times’ staff or those of Free Press Publishing. In this same sports section at this same time of year in 2022, I bragged about my boldness in picking Kentucky, a No. 2 seed, to win the Men’s NCAA Tournament. Not surprisingly after such a statement, the Wildcats proceeded to be shocked by No. 15 seeded St. Peter’s on the first Thursday of the tournament… meaning Kentucky...

SPOKANE--The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will host two public meetings in late March to inform anglers of planned changes to future white sturgeon fishing seasons on Lake Roosevelt. Since 2018, the Lake Roosevelt sturgeon fishery has opened in mid-June and closed at the end of September. In 2023, it will transition to a fall fishery to take advantage of cooler water temperatures which reduce stress on wild adult sturgeon caught by anglers. Changes to other area sturgeon fishing rules will be made as...

SPOKANE-The Odessa girls have had to win their last four games to keep their postseason going, including two games in the District 7 1B Tournament, an opening round state game and a loser-out game at the Spokane Arena. And win all four, they have. Odessa dusted off the Naselle Comets 63-45 in the 1B state opening round at Cheney High School Saturday, Feb. 25, then upset the Moses Lake Christian-Covenant Christian Lions 55-50 in a loser-out game at the Spokane Arena Wednesday,...

SPOKANE-After the No. 4 Columbia (Burbank) Coyotes blew the doors off No. 3 Lake Roosevelt in the second half of a quarterfinal matchup Thursday, one might have wondered if the young and talented Coyotes could challenge No. 1 Davenport for a state title. The Gorillas showed in the 2B state semifinals Friday that that was not the case, never trailing against Columbia en route to a convincing 76-52 win at the Spokane Arena Friday, March 3. Davenport advanced to the state...

SPOKANE—Another big game from the dynamic duo of Jessie Reed and Marilla Hockett was enough for the Oakesdale Nighthawks to keep their season alive while sending the Odessa Tigers home in the process. Oakesdale beat Odessa 56-48 in a loser-out game at the Spokane Arena Friday, March 3. The loss ended the Tigers’ season, one in which Odessa advanced to Arena play for the first time in program history. Both offenses started at breakneck pace. Odessa would sink a shot, and Oak...

SPOKANE—There’s an old adage in sports: It’s hard to beat a team three times. No. 1 Davenport found that to be especially true if you up that number to four, but the Gorillas did just enough to hold off District 7 rival Northwest Christian 62-58 in the 2B state quarterfinals Thursday, March 2. The win was, indeed, Davenport’s fourth in as many tries against the Crusaders this season. But No. 7 NWC did not make it easy at the Spokane Arena Thursday. “Three times is never eas...

CHENEY - Being ranked No. 1 in the state tournament tends to place a proverbial target on one's back. That didn't seem to bother the Davenport boys in the opening round of the tournament, as the Gorillas romped past No. 8 Adna 75-60 to advance into the state quarterfinals Friday, Feb. 24. The win also ensured at least two games at the Spokane Arena this weekend for Davenport. Two plays early in the game set the tone for the night. Adna tried double-teaming Tennessee Rainwater...
