The 75th annual Odessa High School alumni banquet held in the Odessa Community Center last Saturday evening was attended by more than 150 alumni, along with their spouses and guests. Representing the class of 1935, Ed Kern was once again the winner of the prize for being the oldest alum present at the banquet. The class of 2001 celebrated their 10th year out of high school by putting on the banquet. Emcee for the evening was Scott Bacon, with assistance from James Lane and wit...

Partisan wrangling in Congress over the federal deficit and government spending has created gridlock. Not much else is getting done. Into that void have stepped federal bureaucrats who are circumventing Congress to implement sweeping policy changes. With President Obama’s legislative initiatives stalled in Congress, his appointed agency directors are finding ways to implement his programs without congressional approval. These aren’t penny-ante changes – some programs carry tri...
In his June 9, 2011 letter, Garry Rosman had some questions concerning the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the formally state-owned property in Creston. I would like the opportunity to address this subject. Mr. Rosman is under the false impression that the state spent $1.3 million to build what he referred to as ‘the Creston Bio Energy Plant.’ The facts are that the state never funded the biodiesel project in Creston. The building belonged to the NW Lincoln County Regional Public Development Authority (PDA) and was...
Nate here. I love the Odessa Record so much that I have a scrip sent to President Obama, Gov. Gregoire, my mom, my grandpa and several others. The Record always puts in opinions regardless of the content and generally un-edited. I like that it is true and to the point. However, I have a problem with this week’s paper, and it is not the Odessa Record’s fault. They publish it; we read it. Page 2 – Lise Ott, always positive and a good read. Thank you. This week, Page 5, “Notices of infraction will be issued.” Let me start (by...
I want to make it CLEAR that this is my OPINION and NOT a rebuttal to anything written to you in the past. It seems to me that doing the same thing over and over again, looking for a different result, is insane. I have a hard time with people in this community or any other, who are placed in a public position, no matter how large or small. They are looked up to for guidance and good decisions, some are given good pay, insurance benefits and other perks not to mention the TRUST of the townspeople in Odessa, and they rip them...
Grant County Health District (GCHD) is investigating additional reports of human cases of Q fever, a bacterial disease primarily caused from contact with goats, sheep and cattle. On Monday, June 13, 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sent a Q fever team to Grant County. GCHD and the Washington State Department of Health are cooperating with the CDC on the investigation. Questions about the CDC’s investigation should be sent to Emily Zielinski-Gutierrez at Ebz0@cdc.gov. GCHD is communicating with the m...
With nothing but well wishes, we congratulated and celebrated Odessa’s 12 graduating seniors last week, all but one with confirmed college plans in place. There were many scholarships announced for excellence in academics, athletics and community service. However, the full tuition and other college or university-associated costs far exceed the amounts of those hard-earned and well-deserved scholarships. Katie Schmidt, a reporter from The Olympian, tells us of another recent g...
Shipping costs have always been a major concern for Odessa area grain growers. Just before the harvest of 1911, the Great Northern Railway announced a cut in the rate to ship grain to Seattle from Odessa. The Milwaukee Road had built the spur line up Rocky Coulee from Warden to Marcellus the year before and was offering cheaper rates to the Coast to growers who shipped out of Packard, Schoonover, Lauer, Batum, Moody and Ruff stations. To be competitive, the Great Northern lowered its charges. In its issue of July 14, 1911,...
School is out and the swimming pool is open. Soon young entrepreneurs will be setting up lemonade stands to earn money for swimming and other summertime activities. Personally, I try to never pass by a children's lemonade enterprise. I like to encourage budding business owners. Following are some tips for operating a successful lemonade stand. 1. Make your signs big. Use an extra wide marking pen to make lettering that can be read from half a block away so customers have time...
Odessa Deputy Marshal Bryce Peterson got one of his stranger calls for service this past week. A swarm of bees landed in the roadway just outside of Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center. The bees all remained pretty much in a clump in the roadway, even as people tried to run over them to chase them away. They stayed, however, and Peterson was at a loss. After consulting with Odessa Public Works director Roger Sebesta, however, he was referred to local resident Harvey Delzer, who...

At the June 15 board meeting of the Odessa-Harrington Athletic Co-op, Darin Reppe presented a review including participation numbers, statistics and awards of winter and spring sports. Of note was the fact that all teams qualifying by numbers for academic recognition received recognition, with the girls’ tennis team being the State Academic Champions. Reppe then presented a recap of the budget to date for the 2010-2011 school year. Total athletic mileage through May was 3...
Nine more students have learned how to be a better babysitter by attending a Babysitting Basics class. These nine, combined with the twenty-eight who completed the class last spring, brings the total to 37 students who have completed the course, sponsored by the Odessa Healthcare Foundation as part of their ongoing efforts to bring health education to our community. On Saturday June 11, 2011, Laura Mathieson, instructor from Community Health Education and Resources (CHER),...
Students, parents, staff and the community have worked hard together to produce a wonderful school year. I want to wish everyone a great summer full of fun and relaxation. Congratulations to our graduates; I wish them the best. We accomplished a lot this year and are going to continue our work to keep Odessa the best school around. In response to concerns about the growing numbers of students who qualify for free and reduced meals at school, we decided to offer a summer breakfast and lunch program. The program will begin...

On the heels of a fatal motorcycle crash Tuesday morning in the Olympia area, state traffic safety leaders say motorists and motorcyclists both have roles in sharing the road responsibly. The Department of Licensing and State Patrol released a public service announcement and new poster focused on reducing drug or alcohol impairment of riders-- one of the top causes of fatal motorcycle crashes. Excessive speed, another top cause of fatal crashes, was in play in the Tuesday morning crash. To operate a motorcycle on a public...

Summer boating is right around the corner, and so is the deadline for renewing boat and watercraft registration decals. In Washington state, all boat registrations expire on June 30. Boat registrations can be renewed on-line and in person at a neighborhood vehicle licensing office. Those who choose to renew in an office should make sure to note the registration number on the bow of the boat or watercraft and take that information with them. Renewing on-line is fast, easy and secure. Boat owners who have not yet signed up to...
The Washington State Senior Games will recognize Spokane businessman and lifetime athlete Jon Heimbigner in July with its premier “Spirit of the Games” Award. “Jon Heimbigner exemplifies what hard work, dedication, and leadership mean to team sports,” said Washington State Senior Games President Jack Kiley, when announcing the award last month in Olympia. “His enthusiasm contributes to the growth of the Games,” Kiley said. For the past 13 years Heimbigner has traveled annually...
An alert Mattawa-area rancher has helped Grant County deputies catch two men after they allegedly stole about $6,000 worth of metal from his property. About 4 a.m. June 10, a rancher living at 21954 County Road I-SW, saw a pickup truck and trailer enter his property and drive to an area where the rancher store equipment. The rancher later observed the pickup and trailer leaving his property loaded with metal and other materials. The rancher then followed the suspects to a remote area just across the Columbia River in Benton...
