  • Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with food

    Updated May 2, 2024

Cinco de Mayo is a relatively insignificant holiday on the Mexican calendar. However, among Americans, Cinco de Mayo has become an opportunity to celebrate Mexican culture and cuisine. Each year on May 5, many Cinco de Mayo celebrants toast with their favorite agave-based beverage (typically tequila) and dine on Mexican specialties. Visiting a Mexican restaurant may be a large part of Cinco de Mayo festivities. Those who want to keep the party closer to home can bring the...

  • Did you know?

    Updated May 2, 2024

Contrary to one popular misconception, Cinco de Mayo is not a celebration of Mexican independence. According to History.com, Mexico’s Dia de la Independencia is commemorated on September 16. So what does Cinco de Mayo commemorate? Cinco de Mayo commemorates an improbable Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Though Cinco de Mayo is now celebrated across the United States, it remains a minor holiday in Mexico that is primarily observed in the state of Puebla. Knowledge of the holiday’s ori...

  • EV program like spending $1,125 on latte

    Todd Myers|Updated May 2, 2024

Gov. Jay Inslee wants to buy 8,767 people a $1,125 latte. Metaphorically, at least. Inslee’s new program to subsidize the purchase of electric vehicles is so wasteful at reducing CO2 emissions, it is the equivalent of paying that absurd amount for a 16-ounce latte. On Earth Day, Inslee announced a $45 million program to subsidize the purchase or lease of electric vehicles. The program is targeted at those making 300% of the federal poverty level or less, which amounts to $...
