By Drew Lawson The Times DAVENPORT – Labor Day 2020 was a day that will live in infamy throughout the Pacific Northwest, as several fires ignited that fateful Sept. 7 and caused damage across Washington and Oregon. Lincoln County was no different, as one of the largest fires in state history began around 10:35 a.m. and blazed through over 127,000 acres of land-over 10% of the acreage in the whole county-in its destructive path from Hawk Creek southwest through Telford t...

REARDAN – The 2021 fall season didn't get off to an optimal start for the Reardan volleyball team. The varsity girls fell to the Upper Columbia Academy Lions at home in four sets in Reardan's home opener Tuesday, Sept. 7 25-17, 13-25, 25-17, 25-19. Reardan got the upper hand in the first set, jumping out to a 6-3 lead. UCA then scored eight straight points and pulled away to win the first set 25-17, as the Lions adjusted to tough serves quicker than Reardan was able to. The ho...
The masking at schools and inside public places, regardless of vaccination status, is very questionable. The “one-size-fits-all” approach (typical government) should not apply to us in rural, sparsely populated areas, especially those with small numbers of students, small class sizes. Again, the medical people (CDC, National Institutes of Health, etc. are being overly cautious and unrealistic. Supposedly, some 600,000 have died from Covid in the U.S. With some 320 million people, this is only 0.18 percent of the pop...
On the evening of Aug. 29, several people smelled what they thought must be a natural-gas leak at the corner of First Avenue and Division Street in downtown Odessa. As calls went out to various Odessa governmental and emergency responders, as well as Avista, the natural-gas supplier for Odessa, the only immediate agency response came from Odessa Police Chief Les Jimerson. He came with lights flashing, cleared and blocked off the immediate area and then waited. And waited. And waited. Three hours or so later, an Avista truck a...

The Old Town Hall Rejuvenation Society, teamed now with the Odessa Historical Society, has worked for nearly a decade to make improvements to the building. The Odessa High School chapter of FBLA joined in to help raise funding for these efforts, beginning with an...

Thanks to the Lowe’s grant, Odessa will soon have a beautifully restored facility with new hardwood floors, the return of a century-old tin ceiling and a removable wall to accommodate crowds large and small. However, the remaining three walls in the south room need a serio...

ODESSA – Norman Ott has retired from his eponymous business, Ott Insurance, after 42 years at the helm. His retirement does not mean that there will be an empty storefront on First Avenue however. His business partner for the past several years, Cindy Haase, will now operate Haase Insurance from the same west First Avenue location. That was the plan back when the two of them entered into a business partnership that ultimately operated insurances offices in both Harrington a...

On Monday, the governor announced COVID vaccine mandates for most state employees and health care workers or they could lose their jobs. While employees will be able to apply for religious or medical exemptions, I believe this is heavy-handed and unnecessary. Many of you know I contracted COVID, but I have since been vaccinated, given experience I had and the seriousness of this virus. I would add, the most important part of my job as your state representative is being able...
DAVENPORT – School leaders and the board aren’t happy with recent mandates brought down by the state, state superintendent Chris Reykdal and Gov. Jay Inslee. After making some tweaks, the board agreed to sign on to a letter penned by Davenport superintendent Jim Kowalkowski, middle/high school principal Chad Prewitt and elementary principal Noelle Carstens to Inslee with three specific requests at the board’s Aug. 16 meeting. The first request asked Inslee to pivot from Reykdal’s recommendation that all school employe...

Zucchini season is here. There are many ways to use this prolific vegetable. Small, tender zucchini sautéed with a bit of onion, or added to a stir-fry, grated in breads, cookies or cakes, and some sneaky cooks puree and add to just about anything. Camouflaged with chocolate, baked into breads and pastries and mixed into sauces and soups, vitamins and fiber are added to diets with out the eater knowing the difference. Chilly nights the past few days found me searching for...
ODESSA – On July 21, 2021, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies Dain Harden and Jon Evans were dispatched to a vehicle theft in progress at Govan Road North and Obrien Road East. Once Vail was placed under arrest, the deputies discovered that a truck at the scene was stolen out of Spokane County and that Jones had a 1999 Ford F-250 stolen from this location. The owner of the recovered vehicle was notified and gave con...

ODESSA – The Odessa Town Council met Monday evening in the public library. Mayor Bill Crossley first convened the scheduled public hearing regarding the purchase of a truck by the Public Works Dept. to replace a current vehicle with more than 100,000 miles on it and a police car by the Town Marshal’s office to replace the Ford Explorer currently in service, which continues to have costly mechanical problems. Its latest issue is failure of the vehicle’s air conditioning system. Given this summer’s excessive heat, Crossle...
