This is the second year I’ve happily donated the balloons and my time to build an arch for Go! Odessa Recreation’s Third Annual Daddy-Daughter Dance. Since this year’s theme was the circus, Kaylene James, founder of Go! Odessa Recreation, had the idea of a yellow and white popcorn- inspired arch coming out of large popcorn bags. The first buttercup of 2019 was a long time coming, but that harbinger of spring has now been found and submitted to The Record by young Simon King, son of Alex and Kaci King of Odessa and a Kindergarten student at P.C. This week a window for the Old Town Hall was purchased in memory of Henry and Rosie Michaelson, life-long Odessa residents. The two met when Rosie was hired as a soda fountain girl by owner Henry "Heinie" Michaelson for his Corner Drug Store. They married in 1941 and their four children, Carol Evavold, Mary Kirstein, Dean Michaelson and Margaret Praetorius, have sponsored this week's window in memory of their parents. Spring Fling is just around the corner, although we have to hope that the snow will be gone by then. Nate Lathrop, organizer of the Car & Bike Show, tells us that businesses and individuals wanting their names to appear on the advertising banner for that event need to contact him as soon as possible. The deadline for creating the banner is fast approaching. The cost for businesses is $50 and for individuals $10. These funds help pay for the band that plays downtown during Spring Fling. Winter isn’t giving up easy this year. Soup season may last through April, and a good thing. A number of Facebook “Welcome to My Kitchen” followers shared yummy soup recipes, and I will never get to try them all before printing in a timely manner. Soup weather has carried over into February. I asked Welcome to My Kitchen Facebook followers their favorite soup to prepare on cold winter days. Several mentioned taco and potato. Sausage, barley and potato was a yummy sounding combination mentioned and several lamented missing 4B’s tomato bisque. To the Editor: Since Odessa city ordinances were passed to eliminate feral cats in 2016, the local quail population has increased. In talking with friends and neighbors around town, it seems most of us are charmed by watching the quail run through our yards. June Odessa agriculture science teacher HaLee Walter and school superintendent Dan Read applied for and have received a grant for $15,000 from the Washington FFA Foundation. The Foundation provides financial support for programs that recognize excellence in agricultural education and FFA leadership.
