I have found over the last two years living here in Odessa and doing interviews, that there are some very wonderful and interesting people. Everyone has a story, and I feel privileged and honored that these people have invited me into their space for a period of time and shared a little bit of their life's journey. Now I would like to introduce you to Thad and Aimee Striffler and their two children Jameson, two and a half, and Isabella (Bella), six. Thad was born in 1984 in...

I’ve needed to write this update for awhile now, and every time I have started it I end up stuck. I know what to say, but the words don’t want to come out as eloquently as I feel they should. So with that said and having it be crunch time, here it goes. I am really sorry to have to give this bit of information, but LuLu’s story has to end because she is no longer with us. A couple months ago she managed to get out of the yard and wander away from both human and canine companio...

Graduation season is here and high school and college graduation celebrations abound. Most years this column features salads and sides for a crowd suggestions for all the celebrations, but this year the column is aimed toward the parents, the soon to be empty nesters who need to figure out cooking for less people. There are several difficulties inherent to cooking for two. Packages, cans and bottles are geared to 4 to 6 servings. What do you do with the rest? Recipes for two...

Another beautiful day in paradise, and today I was privileged to have a wonderful visit with Lois Renken. She was born in 1933 in Kellogg, Idaho and grew up in Spokane Valley with her parents Mark and Esther Owen. In 1946, she moved with her parents to Moses Lake, where her father got a job as fire chief at Moses Lake Air Force Base, later known as Larson Air Force Base. When Lois was in the second half of her junior year in high school she moved again with her parents to...

Rhubarb is in plentiful supply in local gardens and area supermarket. Sauces, pies, chutneys, cookies, even salad recipes abound for preparing this prolific spring and early summer fruit. Crust-less Rhubarb Pie is a recipe I developed a number of years ago. This pie works well with fresh or frozen rhubarb and is quick and easy to prepare. Crust-less Rhubarb Pie Filling: 6 cups sliced rhubarb 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg Batter: 1 cup g...
[Editor’s note: Last week we ran pictures of this event at school. Additional information about the event is provided here. An earlier event called Donuts with Dad provided similar activities.] With the passage and implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), parent and family engagement has become a high priority for LAP and Title 1 programs. Research demonstrates that the degree of parent engagement correlates closely with student achievement. Districts are required to further involve parents through the use o...
A mother’s love is something that no one can really explain, it is made of a deeper devotion of deeper sacrifice, and of endless pain... Her greatness and unselfishness and endearing love always comes with what may, for there is nothing any can do to destroy it, or even come close to taking any of that love away... Her love is patient and is always forgiving when all others are forsaking; it never fails or falters even when her heart is breaking... A mother’s love believes beyond all believing even when world around her is...
Opioid addiction across the United States, including rural America, is very prevalent and becoming more widespread with its affects hitting closer and closer to home. In response to the opioid crisis and its effects, Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center is modifying its practice to stay consistent with current industry prescriptive practice. On average, 115 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. Around 66% of the more than 63,000 drug overdose deaths in 2016 involved an opioid. From 1999 to 2016, more than 630,000...

What a beautiful morning! I am very thankful for life and to be experiencing it here in the lovely, peaceful community of Odessa. Let me introduce you to Jesse, Meri Jane Bohn and their three-year-old daughter Brinley. What a sweetie she is. Meri Jane told me she has always been drawn to eastern Washington. About six years ago she applied for a job at town hall, but that job never opened to her. That did not deter her from her dream however. Her husband Jesse applied for a...
Garret Braun, a 2014 graduate of Odessa High School, completed his studies at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, on May 12, 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Life Science in Agricultural Systems Management. His overall grade-point average was 3.5. Garret is in Odessa working on the family farms. He is a fifth-generation farmer on both sides of his family....

With the passing of Barbara Bush this past week, it seems appropriate to share her recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies. During the 1992 Bush/Clinton presidential campaign a family favorite from each of the candidates wives were shared with the public. The recipe is very similar to the recipe 4H Cooking Clubs used in the 1950’s, when chocolate chips only came in 6 ounce packages and brown sugar was commonly measured by tablespoons in recipes. This is a small batch recipe. I r...

Asparagus season has begun. Though we can buy asparagus in the supermarket most of the year, fresh locally grown is a cut above in flavor and texture. Keeping the fresh flavor and texture is all in the preparation and cooking process; and desired texture is a matter of personal taste. Most folks prefer a tender crisp texture, but achieving those results requires attention to detail. I was recently asked about a method of cooking asparagus upright in a canning jar. The history...

It is finally spring in Odessa, and the world is beautiful. Let me introduce you to my neighbor Frank Clark. Frank was born April 29, 1947 in Everett. He grew up in Lake Stevens with his parents and five sisters. He graduated from Lake Stevens High School in 1965, and soon after graduation he joined the U.S. Marines. He served two full combat terms in Vietnam. During that time he met a girl in Japan. They married and through that union two daughters were born. The marriage...

What a wonderful surprise met Merleen Smith when a knock came to her front door from Marcus Horak who was delivering food to The Odessa Food Bank on behalf of The Stumpjumpers who had generously donated many food items to help stock the shelves there. The Odessa Food Bank is most appreciative for the support given by the Stumpjumpers who come to our community each spring....

Spring keeps tempting us with bits of sunshine between bouts of April downpours. The ground is too soggy to do much garden preparation, so it is a good time to clean out your freezer. Those who purchase a whole beef and have it cut to order, may find an oxtail among the end of season packages. Oxtail Stew is a rich, savory dish, but it requires some long, slow, cooking times. Using a slow-cooker to prepare this dish makes the process manageable. The key to a good mild flavor...

On Saturday, March 24, I had the extreme pleasure of donating and building, with the much needed help of Tammy Tokas, a 25-ft.-long (give or take) balloon arch for The Mad Hatters Ball, the second annual daddy/daughter dance hosted by Go! Odessa Recreation. I absolutely love creating these rubber works of art and it had been almost exactly 10 years since I had last built one. Although I know balloons haven't changed much in the last 10 years I was still extremely nervous. I...

On Monday, April 2, 2018, 10 students spent the first day of spring break in the basement of the Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center becoming certificated babysitters. This brings the total to 103 students who have participated in a Babysitting Basics class. Beginning in 2010, the Odessa Healthcare Foundation, as part of their goal to provide health education to our community, began sponsoring this class for youth interested in improving their skills as babysitters. Carol...
A family reunion is being planned for all descendants of John Adam and Katherine Schoessler Weber in Quincy over the Memorial Day weekend. The Webers emigrated to the United States in 1902, following sons John Adam (Magdalena Giest) in 1889, Jacob in 1901, Christian and Henry in 1902, along with one daughter, Katherine (Fred Reider). John Adam and Magdalena Weber settled in the Packard area by 1891. We are hoping to make contact with Weber relatives and invite them to the reunion. Please email kbird77@gmail.com or...

This week we have an assortment of culinary odds and ends, some with Easter dinner in mind, others, answers to recipe requests and cooking inquiries. Often it is a little trick or tip, or knowing exactly which brand to purchase, that insures exact results. Several weeks ago, Debbie Buscher brought some tasty crackers and a sweet bread for a Sunday coffee hour. Many asked for the recipes. Debbie reports, both were purchased at Costco. They looked and tasted homemade. The...
Monday, March 19, Fronen Steppdecker, The Odessa Quilt Club, hosted their 23rd Annual Quilt Til You Wilt, one-day retreat at the Odessa Community Center. The 90 participants came from around the state, some from as far way as Walla Walla, Seattle, Omak and Spokane, for the day of quilting demonstrations and project show and tell. The day started with sweet rolls from Grannie BarBar’s bakery and early-bird quilting demonstrations. Then a schedule of demonstrations, show-and-tell and quilting games proceeded until well after t...
The Odessa Community Ministerial Association (OCMA) appreciates the Odessa community for its generous support over the years. We want to help make the community more aware of who we are and what we do. Most people in town have a general idea or have heard of our group but don’t know much about us. First of all, we are a non-profit organization consisting of the leaders of the churches in Odessa. Together we confess Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. By His word and command, and because He has shown great love for us, we s...

Spring officially begins March 20th. Snowdrops and crocus are blooming, birds are flitting about searching out nesting material. I pulled a few dry weeds and laid them on the garden path to pick up latter. A minute later, a small wren was carrying off choice bits. French Toast is a favorite for spring morning breakfasts, and as we move into the fresh fruit and berry seasons. I recently was in charge of French Toast for a youth breakfast and was asked for the recipe. I make...

My interview this week was within walking distance, just four blocks away from my home. But then anywhere you want to go in Odessa is within walking distance. The weather is beautiful, the birds are singing and the people are friendly along the way. I first met Bill and Vikki Pichon last summer while my husband James and I were taking a walk. They were sitting outside on the front porch of the lovely old Victorian-style house they had recently purchased. I was invited in and...
