Various law enforcement agencies have been reporting on social and print media that people should not abbreviate the year 2020 when signing legal documents, warning that signing important documents or checks with an abbreviation of 2020, i.e. “20,” could put them at risk of fraud. Writing the date out in full on legal documents and checks is recommended (write 2020, not just “20”). If the date is written out as 01/01/20 (January 1, 2020), for example, fraudsters can easily change the date to 2019, 2021 or any other date in th...

After much agonizing and several months of searching for anyone with ties to Odessa who might want to take over publication of The Odessa Record, we have decided that interest in a small weekly newspaper simply isn’t present among current and former Odessa folks. So the time has come, for the sake of family and for health reasons, to hang up the red editor’s pen and try to enjoy some more relaxed years of retirement. The job has been enjoyable for the most part, and the expressions of thanks for our efforts by several avid re...

Not only is 2020 a New Year, but a new decade is dawning as well, and some people are framing their annual resolutions in a bigger picture than just the next 12 months. So rather than making New Year’s resolutions, Acamea Deadwiler (www.Acameadeadwiler.com), author of Single That: Dispelling the Top 10 M...

The year 2019 provided plenty of both good news and bad news for the Town of Odessa. The town’s youth did well both athletically and academically. Efforts to bolster the business community were less successful overall, but the local Chamber of Commerce, the Public Development Authority and individual business owners continue to strive toward revitalization of the downtown core. January Margie and Michael Sgobba moved to Odessa, Margie’s former place of residence, from west of the Cascades, where they were involved in a min...

An avid reader of The Odessa Record called to tell us that our reporting on the recent football championship did not give enough credit to the coaches who molded the 2019 Odessa High School team into the champions they became. We agree. We salute head coach Jeff Nelson for being a great motivator for the boys in the Odessa football program. And we also applaud assistant coaches Josh Clark and Justin Ziebel for their efforts to guide and inspire this team that has made Odessa...

As I walked into the community center on Wednesday, December 4, you could feel the Christmas spirit at the door. The room was filled with vendors from near and far. If you were looking to find that perfect Christmas gift or special treat, it was probably there. DJ "Sparkly Joyce" was on the mixer playing all of my favorite Christmas tunes with a grin from ear to ear. Her helper, Pastor Jon, was flying higher and faster than Rudolph himself, flitting all around the stage,...
