    The state track meet for 1B, 2B and 1A schools took place last Friday and Saturday at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. The Odessa track and field teams acquitted themselves well, with the boys 4xl00 relay team ascending to the top of the podium as state champions in that event. Caitlyn Schuh for the Odessa girls nabbed a second-place finish in the discus and set both a personal record and a new school record for that event at 120-11.     Marilu (Giese) Quast passed away May 20, 2019. She was born July 5, 1930 on a farm outside Odessa to Daniel and Minnie Giese. Attended Odessa schools graduating in 1948, attended Kinman Business College, and then worked at Odessa State Bank until her marriage to Lorus Lamar Quast on December 21, 1950. Lorus graduated from WSU in June 1952, and entered the army offering the opportunity to travel the world until retirement in Spokane in 1974.     Last week the nation celebrated EMS week. Unfortunately, Odessa, like many rural communities, needs more EMTs. Washington’s smallest communities are among those being hurt the most. Rural areas typically don’t have enough volume to employ full time EMTs and therefore rely heavily on community members to gain the necessary credentials and fill the need by sharing response call with others who typically have full time “day jobs”.
